In the competitive world of retailers, I find that it is often beneficial for investors to focus on companies that offer niche products and/or services to consumers. The reasoning is simple; a generic business, no matter how high the quality, is easier to mimic and therefore tends to invite more competition. On the other hand, a specialty retailer with a more direct focus can market products more effectively to a select group of consumers while at the same time remaining better protected against encroaching competition.
