James Hill

With the release of Man With a Love Song, James Hill, who has earned a reputation as Canada’s foremost – indeed one of the world’s foremost – players of the often-underestimated ukulele, stands poised and ready to take his place in the ranks of today’s best young songwriters.

Barely into his 30s, Hill has already made a career out of knocking worlds against each other. His technical prowess on ukulele is achieved through attacking what is mostly regarded as a lowly folk instrument with the seriousness and nuance of technique usually associated with the highest levels of virtuosity on, say, classical violin or piano. His entertaining and unpredictable solo concerts have a world-wide audience that would be envied by many wannabe rock stars and his inspirational music seminars have made him something of a ukulele-based motivational speaker. Anyone lucky enough to have seen one of Hill’s recent live shows might also be familiar with his hip-hop influenced forays into heavily percussive, beat-driven prepared-ukulele “sound sculptures”: John Cage meets Chalmers Doane via Kid Koala.

Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer are a formidable powerhouse of sound, with a repertoire of traditional and contemporary folk, old-time country and swing music. Their superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the acoustic and electric guitar, five-string banjo, mandolin, pennywhistle, ukuleles and many other instruments. Cathy & Marcy’s family concerts have set the standard for family participation and fun while their recordings have inspired kids, parents, grandparents, teachers and friends to sing together and enjoy the magic of music.

They have been nominated for a total of ELEVEN Grammy Awards, and won two GRAMMY Awards for BON APPETIT! MUSICAL FOOD FUN and “cELLAbration: A Tribute to Ella Jenkins”, in the Best Musical Album for Children category. In 2003, they were nominated for three Grammy awards, including their eclectic CD, “POSTCARDS” in the Best Traditional Folk Album category. Also nominated in Trad. Folk for “Live in the UK: Tom Paxton with Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer”.

The Quiet American
The Quiet American is husband and wife duo, Aaron and Nicole Keim. A home-grown modern folk revival, their music incorporates ballads, banjo breakdowns, raggy choruses, gospel duets and other dusty Americana gems, all delivered on a wide variety of acoustic instruments, some of which Aaron built himself. Before forming the Quiet American, Aaron was known for his work with the well-loved Colorado roots band Boulder Acoustic Society. Over 8 years, the band built a passionately loyal following, but Aaron found that their diverse sound was keeping him from his passion for old time folk music. In a quest to get “back to basics,” he turned inwards, moving to the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon to work as a luthier for Mya-Moe Ukuleles. Nicole, who is a musician and artist, embraced the chance to sing and play with Aaron, as they re-dedicated themselves to roots music and to a new life together. This home-made, hand-crafted lifestyle created a new sound for their music, drawing them closer to the traditions that first inspired them.
