We first met our dog Miguel in 2006 when he was a street urchin begging for food while roaming the streets of the small town of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.

Unable to resist his piercing eyes, floppy ears, and prancing gait, we decided to bring him back to Seattle to join our family.

You’d think a formerly homeless dog with protruding ribs resembling a relief map of Nepal would vacuum down any crumb of food we placed in front of him but Miguel turned out to be the most finicky dog I’d ever met.

But figuring out what he would eat wasn’t our only challenge. He would also periodically stop eating a particular brand of dog food for no other reason other than he wanted something different to eat.

He communicated this to us by simply not eating, sometimes for up to two days, until we found a new type of food that he deigned edible.

We continued to engage in this food dance with Miguel until a few months ago when we started feeding him Natural Pet Pantry Steam Kettle Stews for dogs, and so far this food has been like kryptonite for Miguel’s finicky appetite.

He doesn’t just love the different types of meat in the cooked meals (buffalo, venison, beef, chicken, and turkey), he also loves the vegetables in them like yams, kale, carrots, celery, zucchini, and potatoes. Before we began serving him the cooked meals he would never have considered eating them.

Randi Rossman-Astrom and Rolf Astrom were longtime customers of Natural Pet Pantry before they bought the business in 2012. Randi told me they bought the business because “it was the perfect opportunity to educate pet owners by explaining the importance of a healthy diet.”

Randi is a healthy pet food fanatic in the best possible sense of the word. She has no problem evangelizing about pet health and nutrition, and she loves to educate pet owners about holistic veterinary care, rescuing dogs, and supporting locally-owned businesses.

She also views the importance of providing pets with nutritious raw and cooked food in a much broader context.

For instance, she believes that nutrition is “one of the most important steps in fighting disease.” She also said that healthy food can reduce the number of dogs in shelters because most animals are surrendered “due to allergies, illness, and large vet bills.”

When you buy Natural Pet Pantry’s steam cooked stews or raw food, you can be sure it contains the healthiest ingredients available and is produced using environmentally friendly methods. For example:

All their pet foods made free of byproducts, synthetic vitamins and dangerous chemicals.

They use certified USDA organic vegetables that contain no genetically modified ingredients. This is great both for your dog’s health and the environment as conventional fertilizers and pesticides are not used to grow them.

Their products contain no hormones or antibiotics.

They uses a steam kettle powered by natural gas for to make their stews. The steam is created by recirculating water within its outer wall. This method of cooking is up to 70 percent more energy efficient over the use of electrical stove top cooking.

They grind and pack all of their food products by hand.

Every meal is guaranteed to meet or exceed the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for Adult Maintenance.

Natural Pet Pantry also sells raw pet food and treats made by quality producers as well as toys, beds, collars and leashes made by small Northwest companies and artisans, several of which are eco-friendly and made of recycled materials that are biodegradable.

Rolf and Randi have also made giving back to their customers and community a huge priority. They hold regular events in their store to educate pet owners on subjects like holistic veterinary care, dog massage, vaccine titer clinics, and nutrition.

In addition, they donate their food to local dog rescues like Animal Aid and Rescue Foundation, Valhalla Rescue, Greyhound Pets Inc., Old Dog Haven, Boston Terrier Rescue, Harbor Rescue, and Motley Zoo Animal Rescue so they can provide the dogs they save with healthy, nutritious food.

So if you have an incredibly finicky dog like Miguel, or you simply want to give your pet the highest quality food that’s produced locally, give Natural Pet Pantry a try and visit their stores in Kirkland and Burien or get it delivered to your home.

Your dog will love the food, and you will be supporting a conscientious local company that’s committed to providing your dog with the healthiest food possible, supporting local dog rescue groups, and educating pet owners about keeping their dogs happy and healthy.

FULL DISCLOSURE: While Natural Pet Pantry advertises on our website, we began feeding Miguel their food without their knowledge before they purchased their ad. Seattle DogSpot received no monetary or product compensation from Natural Pet Pantry for this honest review based solely on our experience with feeding their steam cooked meals to our dog.
