We first met our dog Miguel in 2006 when he was a street urchin begging for food while roaming the streets of the small town of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.
Unable to resist his piercing eyes, floppy ears, and prancing gait, we decided to bring him back to Seattle to join our family.
You’d think a formerly homeless dog with protruding ribs resembling a relief map of Nepal would vacuum down any crumb of food we placed in front of him but Miguel turned out to be the most finicky dog I’d ever met.
But figuring out what he would eat wasn’t our only challenge. He would also periodically stop eating a particular brand of dog food for no other reason other than he wanted something different to eat.
He communicated this to us by simply not eating, sometimes for up to two days, until we found a new type of food that he deigned edible.
