She was raised in a Roman Catholic home and has two brothers and three half-siblings. Her parents separated before Hargitay was born but briefly reconciled a few months before her birth. They divorced in August 1964 and her mother married her former director, Matt Cimber. Mansfield was killed in a car accident in 1967; 3-year-old Hargitay was also in the car in which two others were also killed. She was left with a scar on the side of her head. She and her siblings were raised by her father and his third wife. She attended Groundlings theatre company in Los Angeles, in which Kathy Griffin was her improve teacher. She is best known for her role as New York City sex crimes Detective Olivia Benson on the popular television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
