Proper Disposal of Leaves

Cooler weather already has visited Central Virginia, and leaves have begun to fall. For the health and well-being of our watershed, leaves should not be raked, blown or dumped into ditches, streams, ponds or lakes.

When ditches get clogged with leaves, and debris can no longer properly drain – water ponds along streets and can flood intersections and homes.  Eventually the waste makes its way into the streams and lake, causing an excess in nutrients which reduces the clarity and quality of the water.

Recommended tips:

Use leaves on the lot where they fall.

Set your lawn mower to mulch and mow high.  Mulch an inch at a time, allowing leaves to decompose into the soil.

Bag leaves and grass clippings.  County Waste will collect up to five bags of leaves per household each week with your trash.

Keep your ditches and culverts cleared from leaves and debris.

Dumping of leaves or other debris is not permitted on vacant lots or LMOA property at any time.  All leaves not used on residents’ own lots must be bagged and left for pick-up by County Waste or removed by a contractor who will dispose of them outside of the community.
