Lots of different people in modern dentistry carry out the task of keeping your teeth at their best, but a dental hygienist is one of the most important. Dental hygienists have become an integral and vital part of any dental team. A preventive approach to dentistry has become just as important as the restorative approach to dentistry and so visiting your local dental hygienist is paramount for maintaining good overall oral health.
Many people can be confused or unsure as to how often they should attend their dental hygienist. The truth is that there is no fixed length of time and maintaining a status of good oral health is a working progress. On average, however, we tell everyone to try to visit at least twice a year, but others, who are prone to gum problems, might have to come more often.
On your first visit the dental hygienist will examine your teeth and gums, record any areas that may require more attention with regards to improvements, and if anything of concern arises, will tell your dentist.
Bi-annual visits are the standard recall for visits to the dental hygienist. This recall is usually for people with minor issues and is the minimum amount of visits any person should have. If a person has a lot of dentistry in their mouth or implants, more frequent visits would be recommended to keep everything in good condition. Anything in your mouth, whether a tooth or an implant can get problems if neglected.
Some people may be at risk for developing decay more than others; this is down to dietary factors and tooth factors such as weakened enamel or frequent snacking on sugary or acidic foods/drinks. People who are more at risk should attend the dental hygienist more frequently to avoid any potential issues from becoming more serious. Protective sealants can be placed on the teeth and advice given as to how to reduce the risk of decay. Generally in these cases three to four monthly visits would be required to keep everything in check.
If there is a history of gum disease in your family, you may be more at risk of developing gum disease. In this case, the decision may be wise to attend your local dental hygienist on a regular basis to try and prevent gum disease from occurring in the first place. By attending regularly, the dental hygienist will determine the intervals suitable for you.
