Coming home to a Turf Field
is nothing like Homecoming. I love the thrill of seeing old friends and finding out the twists and turns each life has taken. Hearing the distinctive laugh of a long ago friend is a great way to travel back in time. Outside on an athletic field in the crisp fall air, we feel young again as whistles blow and we watch a new generation play the games that we played.
I grew up in Georgia, so I don get to go back for homecoming weekend as often as I like. Facebook is a great way to see the neat things happening to old friends, but it no replacement for heading back to the old stompin grounds. There is something primal about walking the same steps you did as a kid. Yet, what pulls me to the south is memories and strong as they may be, it thrills me that Hingham is my children home.
I love that when my children think about home they will remember Brewed Awakenings and the Loring Theatre. I think of picnics and games on the town athletic fields and smile. In addition to having wonderful schools,Cheap Babyliss MiraCurl, Hingham is a town that loves youth sports. The rainbow of soccer jerseys scurrying around the high school fields is one of the happiest sights I know.
This year I had the privilege of getting my sons involved in the Hingham Youth Lacrosse program. I will never forget helping my sons put their pads and helmets on for the first time. On a dewy morning in September, I watched my sons join a long line of guys as they were into the world of lacrosse (being able to wield sticks without getting yelled at) at the Margetts field on Ward Street.
It was touching to watch the dozen or so fathers introduce Hingham next generation to a sport many will become passionate about. In between the awkward stick handling and drills the boys giggled and grinned. Suddenly I forgot that we had to get up earlier than I would liked to get the boys to practice. Out on the field, my boys were learning about home away from mommy and it was a beautiful thing to watch. my boys association with Hingham Youth Lacrosse, I learned of an inspiring project put together by a group of Hingham fathers led by Brian Hlidek, DJ MacKinnon, and Rob Hale. They are spearheading a privately funded campaign to bring turf to the Ward Street field.

They are spearheading a privately funded campaign to bring turf to the Ward Street field.
At first the idea of turf conjured up images of the Brady Bunch backyard. But as I learned about the advantages to having a local turf field (many of our surrounding communities already play youth sports on turf),dion jordan jersey, I was impressed by the initiative of these local dads. Having a turf field on Ward Street would impact more sports than just lacrosse. Soccer, football, field hockey, and any other field activity can be held on this surface that is functional on a year round basis. March games and practices are currently at the mercy of the weather turf eliminates the awful uncertainty schedulers face when they plan games in the early spring.
Turf has existed since 1964. Now in its fourth generation, it is fully pervious so groundwater can recharge, and environmentally safe (comparable to soft surfaces surrounding up to code playgrounds). No chemicals or watering are required to maintain turf, which cuts the town cost of maintaining this field by nearly 75 percent.
Statistically proven to reduce injuries, it is the playing surface of choice of more than half of NFL teams (including the Patriots). Five thousand communities across America already enjoy turf fields for youth sports, including Wellesley, Cohasset, Lincoln/Sudbury, Concord and Lexington. Lest anyone think that turf fields are a status symbol for elite towns,Babyliss MiraCurl, they might be interested to know that Quincy, Weymouth, and Pembroke have already made the switch to turf. Turf exists where communities are passionate about youth sports.
The reasons beyond the environmental upside and reduced maintenance costs are obvious. There are no limits to playing time (either in number of hours per day, or because of weather) so field usage is dramatically increased. When you add in the injury protection and the possibilities of hosting championship games/tournaments, it becomes clear that turf fields are valuable assets to towns that love youth sports. Turf is the playing surface of the future, and having a turf field means more local games to me as a mom means less driving and more hometown memories.
The Ward Street Turf project has already completed the necessary engineering work, traffic and environmental studies. In addition,Babyliss MiraCurl, support of youth field sports organizations and the Hingham Sports Partnership has been obtained. Within the next 30 days, eric fisher jersey, permitting is expected to be completed.
D J MacKinnon illuminates the careful consideration given to community concerns when he speaks of the lights that would accompany the turf project. Ward Street site was not the first site considered thought carefully about the impact on neighbors with respect to light and noise before settling on the Ward Street fields. MacKinnon, Brian Hlidek, luke joeckel jersey, and Rob Hale (the core leadership of the turf project) encourage all interested residents to attend a neighborhood meeting at 10 am, Oct. 31 at the site.
MacKinnon stressed that neighbors will be more than 600 feet away and that the tree canopy surrounding the field will be maintained. The chosen light contractors have guaranteed zero light pollution beyond a small distance around the field. For those who wonder why lights are necessary, MacKinnon provides a poignant reply. sports are coached by parents, and parents have to work, so light after five pm is essential. Hlidek speaks enthusiastically about the opportunities for soccer and field hockey as well as lacrosse. becomes a better, faster game. More than 50 percent of the fundraising for this project has been completed, but donations are always appreciated as the project is still in the early stages. After the first field is constructed, a second is planned (at the same site) and the possibility of putting a bubble up to enable yearround play is an option as well.
The turf project team has researched ways of offsetting costs and has learned that a variety of club sports on the South Shore will pay top dollar to rent turf fields. Clearly, these local fathers have done their homework! Many more families have already made monetary contributions.
When I think about the community I want to raise my family in, I want to live in a town that invests in the opportunities for children to develop friendships and use time wisely. Hingham parents invest their time in the collective well being of the next generation when they coach town sports and provide a sense of community that transcends school districts. is significant that taxpayers are not asked to foot the bill but that all of Hingham benefits from town improvements that boost real estate values. Hingham wants the best for its children and town parents are putting their money where there mouth is. What a great town for the next generation to home to!
