At least 14 people were killed in a stampede at Rajghat Bridge between Varanasi and Chandauli in Uttar Pradesh, according to the zonal inspector general IG, SK Bhagat. Hundreds were reportedly injured in the chaos, which ensued during a gathering of devotees of spiritual leader Jai Gurudev, while several others are feared to have fallen over the bridge into the Ganga river.

Ambulances and doctors have reached the site of the incident. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of those killed in the stampede, whereas the critically injured will get Rs 50,000 each.
