Glasgow is going to be one heck of an exciting place to live if you’re a music fan in the coming months. It’s nearly time for Radio 1’s Big Weekend to announce more acts set to perform the annual festival. The 3 day event will see thousands of music fans register to get tickets to the Big Weekend held in Glasgow Green from 23rd – 25th May, but it is expected only 60,000 lucky people will get the chance to head down to the event and watch what is expected to be an amazing weekend of live music.

Radio 1 morning host Nick Grimshaw announced the plans to hold the Big Weekend in Glasgow at the start of this year after broadcasting his show live from Pacific Quay alongside Rita Ora and Paolo Nutini, who are the first acts announced for the event. This is an exciting time for Glasgow and music fans as it is the first stint in 8 years the Big Weekend will come to Scotland, the last time Scotland hosted the event was in Dundee, 2006. Alongside the Big Weekend Glasgow has been selected to host the 20th Annual MTV European Music Awards filling the city with the who’s who in music.

As of yet only two acts have been announced but if previous years are anything to go by we are all in for a great weekend. Last year saw the Big Weekend head to Derry-Londonderry with performances from Scottish bearded rock icons Biffy Clyro, dance superstar Calvin Harris and Chase and Status plus appearances from HAIM, Bastille, and Jake Bugg. Previous headliners to the festival include an unforgettable performance from Foo Fighters, Swedish House Mafia, Rihanna and even some guy called Jay Z. The headliners for Glasgow Green are being kept a tight secret currently but hopefully we might have a return visit from the phenomenal Beyoncé for those of us unlucky enough to miss her Glasgow performance at the SSE Hydro.

Music fans don’t have long to wait to register for free tickets – Radio 1 will be announcing more acts set to perform and details on how to apply for tickets in March. Stay tuned for more details coming soon and don’t forget to pick up April’s issue of Scotcampus for a full supplement of all the festival action you need to know about!
