- by Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein’s “Light in the Attic” and “Where The Sidewalk Ends” were staples of the libraries and bookshelves of my youth, and remain a place of solace in difficult times.  By turns strange, simple, stark and silly, there are worlds hidden in a few carefully arranged lines.

Though some have read this poem to be a bittersweet goodbye to the imagination and open possibilities of childhood, I’ve always read it as a validation that I control the magic in my life.  I don’t require an outside source, I don’t require the intervention of another, or the hand of some greater power.

I have had to make my own magic, and that means I CAN make my own magic, and as long as I can do that, it’s my choice if I lose it or not.
