SOS for Cape baboons

After 1 million years on the Cape Peninsula, it is now close to Midnight for a number of our Chacma baboon troops. As development on the peninsula rapidy continues, their small island of natural habitat on the urban edge is shrinking every year. Scientists have noted the lack of genetic variation of this small isolated population and have suggested that the shrinking gene pool is every bit as disastrous for the baboons as the limited land options.

Baboon Matters invite the residents of Scarborough to an evening in aid of the Cape Peninsula's longest standing primates. This event will raise funds to enable us to carry out a feasibility study around relocating some of the Cape’s most at-risk baboon troops (including the Scarborough troop), to a large, free-roaming sanctuary to ensure their long-term survival.  These troops are at risk due to years of aggressive management and human/baboon conflict, as well as a protocol which targets males for euthanasia which has a disastrous effect on an already dwindling gene pool.

Baboon Matters has had initial discussions with Cape Nature, who agree that relocation may be a possible solution for the most hard hit troops.  We are in the beginning stages of preparing a “business plan” for submission to Cape Nature, and this will include a survey of all affected residents. Our art auction will be the first event to get the ball rolling, and we have some fabulous artworks on offer.  We would like to invite not just art lovers but anyone that would like to find out more about what Baboon Matters is up to and what can be done to ensure a sustainable future for all baboons on the Cape Peninsula.
