Telkom – some good news at last!
Persistance? The village telecom Poll? Or maybe just plain Patience and the Passage of time? Hard to know but the good news is that the much needed upgrade of the Scarborough Telkom exchange is about to take place!
According to reliable sources in Telkom, the engineering planning division expects to finish their work by the end of November. Equipment will be sourced during December and construction will take place during January. The new equipment will be commissioned and integrated into the Telkom network during February and March will see the switch over to the new ISAM unit. That’s it. No fibre yet but a significant improvement will be experienced by all ADSL users.
So, all being well, March 2017 is the date. Let’s hope all goes according to plan. In the meantime, let’s keep the pressure up. The Telecom Team will make regular contact with Telkom and please report ALL issues. All logged faults help keep us on the radar!
Now, can anyone help to get Vodacom and MTN sorted out?
Cheers,
The Telecom Team
PS: As a reminder, extracts from the email regarding the Telecom Poll are included below.
Telkom problems! An update
The problem:
Our Telkom link to the outside world has deteriorated significantly during the past year. All of us have experienced non-existent or super-slow internet connections. Landlines are also badly affected. The primary cause of these issues is the state of our Telkom exchange – that is the brick and stone building at the northern entrance to the village. Quite simply, the equipment inside the exchange is old and worn out and urgently needs to be replaced!
ADSL / Fibre:
All over Cape Town, fibre is being rolled out at a blistering pace. There has been much discussion in Scarborough too regarding the benefits of fibre. Yes, fibre lines would be wonderful but the base problem remains – unless the exchange is upgraded no other improvements will have any effect. So, whilst we may one day be able to attract a fibre installer to the village, improved ADSL in the meantime could be the first prize. There are areas in Cape Town where 10Gb+ ADSL connections are common. So, we need an exchange upgrade then improved ADSL then Fibre – unless of course a fibre provider was sufficiently interested to tackle the whole project.
What is Scarborough doing to solve the problem?
At this stage Telkom has scheduled an upgrade to the exchange in 2017 – But, if the right people are contacted and made aware of our problems, it is possible that this date will be brought forward!
To achieve this, we have formed the Telecom Team – a group of Scarborites, as well as Louis from Misty Cliffs. This team has already got the ball rolling. The technical issues have been determined and several key people in Telkom have been contacted. But it is going to be a long journey and we will need to apply sustained pressure on Telkom to react.
How can I help?
Apply pressure on Telkom! Report all service problems both internet related and phone line.
