San Marcos High School’s Visual Arts Department announces a special new student-created website that documents public art in Santa Barbara and the Goleta area. The hope is this website will be used by residents and visitors alike to discover the public art in our area. The tour can be accessed at www.arcgis.com. San Marcos High School art students in Ms. Rainville’s Fall and Spring Color and Design classes and Freehand Drawing classes brainstormed to create a list of public art in the Santa Barbara area. They collaborated by going out into the community to locate, photograph, identify the artist, title, year of installation, find the latitude and longitude of the artwork and enter all the data collected into a spreadsheet for the map tour. The map tour is currently hosted on the school’s website smroyals.org. An Esri ArcGIS map was used to identify the latitude and longitude of each artwork and the Esri Story Tour Map app was used to create the tour. The San Marcos High School Visual Arts Department serves 532 culturally and economically diverse students in grades 9–12 with academically rigorous project-based art and design instruction in a creative and supportive environment.
