The faculty at Dos Pueblos High School approved a new bell schedule for school year 2014-15. The following link will direct you to the page of the Dos Pueblos website that details the schedule as well as anticipated benefits the schedule will afford to all students: http://www.dphs.org/news/269-2014-15-bell-schedule-proposal. All are invited to an informational meeting on Thursday, May 15, 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Dos Pueblos library. ——- San Marcos High School (SMHS) will also be changing to a new bell schedule beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. The schedule change includes an embedded intervention period called Royal Time with the goal of supporting all students academically between period 2 and lunch. A committee of teachers worked throughout the past year developing this program for SMHS. The committee researched best practices of schools around Southern California and made two separate visits to the Whittier School District to see their embedded intervention program in action. This new schedule was approved by 83 percent of SMHS teachers and will help the school meet its WASC and Single Plan For Student Achievement (SPSA) goals. During Royal Time, students with As, Bs, and Cs will have Self-directed Study Time where they can work on homework, study in groups, meet with teachers, AP review sessions, access the library or take an extended on-campus lunch. During Royal Time, SMHS is a closed campus. Students with D and F grades will be directed to mandatory tutorial or mandatory homework time to receive extra support for the classes they are struggling in. Students can also be referred by teachers to mandatory tutorial if they need more support in a class. Freshman will begin the year in the San Marcos Link Crew. This program begins during freshman orientation and will continue during Royal Time. The San Marcos Link Crew is a high school orientation and transition program that increases freshman success by having senior and junior mentors to act as positive role models and motivators. As freshmen success increases, so does the school climate and culture by having great student connection and increased extracurricular participation. Another major component of Royal Time is the use of academic mentors. Principal Ed Behrens said, “We are recruiting mentors to work with struggling students during Royal time. Students will receive community service for their work and will be assigned to help in a specific subject (examples: biology, world history).” Royal Time Student Options - PDF (English) Royal Time Student Options - PDF (Spanish) Bell Schedule for 2014-15 - PDF
