When NFL free agency officially begins with the start of the new league year at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 9, it will come after days of speculation and rumors about each player's landing spot.
A legal tampering period, introduced in 2013, allows teams a three-day period of reaching out to players to express interest and "submit a negotiating position," although no contract offer can officially be made. This led to some controversy during the 2015 offseason and an investigation into the Miami Dolphins' pursuit of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, but the league found that the team didn't break any rules.
For some players, like former Los Angeles Rams defensive end Chris Long and New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, free agency began immediately after being released. But for players with expiring contracts, they aren't officially on the market until the new league year ticks the last day off their contract.
The tampering period has created more whispers and rumors leading up to the beginning of free agency and then an explosion of news when teams can officially sign players. We'll be keeping track of all the whispering here.

Safety Reggie Nelson, formerly of the Bengals, will meet with the Oakland Raiders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
April 1
Greg Toler left Miami without a contract, but he is still on the team's "radar," according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
Linebacker Bruce Carter has spent time with the Jets and Lions, and visited with the Bills on Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
March 31
Stefen Wisniewski, the top offensive lineman on the market, recently visited the Steelers and was with the Eagles on Thursday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The Dolphins continued searching for running back help after Lamar Miller departed in free agency by working out Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Bobby Rainey, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The Chiefs hosted safety Jeron Johnson on Wednesday, according to Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star.

The Steelers are bringing in defensive end Jack Crawford for a visit this week, looking to bolster their defensive line depth chart.
March 29
Right guard Geoff Schwartz visited with the Lions Tuesday, reports Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. This is just the latest visit for the former Giant, who has met with various other teams since being released.
Defensive tackle Terrance Knighton is in New England on Tuesday to visit the Patriots and then is set to meet with Washington on Wednesday, reports NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. Knighton signed a one-year contract with Washington prior to last season.
Wide receiver Anquan Boldin is visiting Washington on Tuesday, reports Mike Jones of the Washington Post. It's the first free-agent visit for the former 49ers wideout.
March 28
Running back Arian Foster is set to visit the Dolphins on Tuesday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Foster could pass a physical at this point, but he still had a lot of rehab before he's ready to play, and Rapoport thinks Foster is unlikely to sign right away.
The Cowboys are still looking for help on the defensive line, and are set to host former Lions defensive end Jason Jones, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
Nick Fairley signed with the Saints with an offer on the table from the Patriots, but the latter team knew Fairley was signing with New Orleans on Friday, which is why New England is hosting Terrance Knighton for a visit on Monday, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
March 27
Cornerback Brandon Boykin is scheduled to visit the Carolina Panthers and three other teams this week.

Former Browns LB Karlos Dansby is taking a trip down I-71 to meet with the Bengals.
Free agent guard Geoff Schwartz visited the Steelers on Thursday.

March 23
Rams head coach Jeff Fisher told the NFL Network that they have "looked at the tape" of quarterback Robert Griffin III, and that he is someone "they have to consider" as a potential addition to the depth chart.
There is mutual interest between the Rams and free agent kicker Greg Zuerlein, reports ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner, but coach Fisher noted there will be a "real competition" regardless of who is brought in to camp.
The Dolphins are exploring every option in trying to add a running back this offseason. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that a veteran free agent, such as Arian Foster, is a possibility for Miami.
March 22
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in response to a question about Greg Hardy that they "are still leaving that open," according to the Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that Green Bay's leading receiver from the 2015 season, James Jones, is not in the team's plans for next year.
Browns head coach Hue Jackson reiterated that offensive lineman Joe Thomas is "not going anywhere," according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, and called him the "best left tackle in the league."
The Ravens have an unofficial agreement in place to add running back Trent Richardson, as Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports, but want to see Richardson get in better physical condition before officially signing him.

The Eagles have settled on their 2016 quarterback, signing Sam Bradford to a two-year deal worth $36 million with $26 million guaranteed.
