The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), presented by UGG® Australia, announces its highly-anticipated line-up for 2014. The 29th edition offers a vast array of films representing 60 countries and a rich selection of films sure to delight audiences from all reaches of the globe. SBIFF is proud to welcome many promising and established filmmakers, as well as honorees to join in its grand tradition of celebrating independent film. The Festival begins Thursday, January 30 and continues through Sunday, February 9, 2014.
“The importance of keeping a sense of exploration and being aware of global issues – as represented in our choice for opening night, MISSION BLUE – is an overriding theme in our 29th edition of SBIFF,” said SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling. “That spirit carried over into every decision and influenced all of our exciting programs as well.”
OPENING & CLOSING NIGHT GALAS
SBIFF 2014 will kick off at the historic Arlington Theatre with the World Premiere of Mission Blue, directed by Robert Nixon and Fisher Stevens. Legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earle is on a personal mission to save the Ocean. Shot over a three-year period in numerous locations around the world, Mission Blue traces Sylvia’s remarkable personal journey, from her earliest memories exploring the Ocean as a young girl, to her days leading a daring undersea mission in the Virgin Islands to her experience as the chief scientist at NOAA and beyond. The film is part oceanic road trip; part biography; part action adventure story. Guiding us through the film is Fisher Stevens, whose own lifelong passion for the Ocean inspired him to produce the Academy award winning film, The Cove. In many ways, Mission Blue is an extension of that earlier film. But rather than explore a single issue, Mission Blue tackles the daunting challenge of how to protect a once vibrant system that is now under attack like never before. As a witness to change over the past 60 years, Sylvia is a steadfast warrior, leading the charge to restore it to health before it’s too late. The film also features James Cameron and the late Mike deGruy. Opening night, sponsored by Studio 7 and The Santa Barbara Independent, will take place at the Arlington Theatre on Thursday, January 30, 2014, with director Fisher Stevens and Sylvia Earle attending.
On Closing Night, SBIFF proudly presents the critically acclaimed Before Trilogy: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. The first two films will screen back-to-back at the Lobero Theatre in the afternoon. After a short break, Before Midnight will close the fest at the Arlington Theatre and will include an in-depth Conversation moderated by IndieWIRE’s Anne Thompson with co-screenwriters Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy and Richard Linklater, who also directed the film. The Before trilogy has been a critical darling since Before Sunrise was released in 1995. The film, starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, portrayed a young couple meeting for the first time on a train who decide to spend the whole day together in Vienna with the chance of never seeing one another again. The sequel, Before Sunset, was released nine years later in 2004, with Hawke’s Jesse and Delpy’s Celine meeting each other again by chance in Paris. The beloved characters were most recently together in this year’s Before Midnight, where we find Jesse and Celine nine years later into their relationship and vacationing in Greece. Closing night film and party is sponsored by Heineken, the Official Beer of SBIFF.
SBIFF is dedicated to maintaining its reputation as one of the most highly regarded film festivals, continuing to bring the most respected honorees, talented filmmakers and best independent films to the American Riviera. An integral element to the festival’s success is the support of the sponsors who understand and champion SBIFF’s vision. Their generous contributions make this exceptional event possible year after year.
SBIFF is honored to welcome back UGG® Australia, returning for their eighth year but this time in a larger supporting role as the Presenting Sponsor of SBIFF’s 29th edition. “We are very proud to be the Presenting Sponsor of the 29th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival,” said UGG Australia Vice President of Marketing Nancy Mamann, who is also a member of the festival’s Board of Directors. “It’s a privilege for our company to participate in this celebration of talent and creativity.”
The National Endowment of the Arts, being an independent federal agency, funds as well as promotes creativity and artistic excellence for the benefit of not only individuals, but also for communities. The awarding of this NEA Grant stems from the relevance of the festival’s growth over the last 11 years and carries with it immense prestige. SBIFF’s efforts to engage the community through film is the cornerstone of the festival and is in alignment with the NEA’s mission statement.

HIGHLIGHTS & LOCAL OFFERINGS
SBIFF Acquisitions Program - SBIFF presents the 3rd Annual Acquisitions Program on the first weekend of the festival, January 31-February 2, 2014. SBIFF continues their commitment to bring forth independent films towards possible distribution. Since it began three years ago, this weekend long event has grown significantly with successful results. A number of films from last year’s program went on to receive distribution following the festival such as Somm, Greencard Warriors (formerly known as Crosstown), A Year in Burgundy, Sex After Kids, Angels in Exile and 2013 Audience Choice winner, Spinning Plates, to name a few. The program, run in association with Traction Media, a Los Angeles-based film production and sales company, was created to allow the acquisitions community easy, industry-friendly access to films at SBIFF. Together, SBIFF and Traction will select the films to be presented in the program, and buyers will be afforded priority access to the chosen films.
Super Silent Sunday – On Super Bowl Sunday, SBIFF will present – FOR FREE — two classic silent films at the Arlington Theatre:
- Wings, directed by William A. Wellman and starring Clara Bow, about two young men — one rich and one middle class — who are in love with the same woman, become fighter pilots in World War 1. They remain friends, but the relation to the girl threatens their friendship. This film has the distinction of winning the first Academy Award for Best Picture, as well as for Best Effects.
- The Thief of Bagdad, directed by Raoul Walsh and starring Douglas Fairbanks, about a thief who falls in love with the Caliph of Bagdad’s daughter. The Caliph will give her hand to the suitor that brings back the rarest treasure after seven moons. The thief sets off on a magical journey while, unbeknownst to him, another suitor, the Prince of the Mongols, is not playing by the rules. Fairbanks brings grace and poetry to physical action, essentially inventing the action/adventure movie genre, known in his day as swashbucklers.
Live accompaniment will be provided by Adam Aceto on the theatre’s Wonder Morton pipe organ, which is one of only five in existence.
Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies – More than a decade ago, SBIFF first introduced “Field Trip to the Movies,” the brainchild of renowned nature cinematographer Mike deGruy, whose passion for exploring and sharing those adventures with audiences through filmmaking was the inspiration for this fascinating and thought-provoking program. Now renamed “Mike’s Field Trip to the Movies,” the goal of the program, which is offered to 4,000 5th and 6th grade students from throughout Santa Barbara County, is to use the art of filmmaking to stimulate creative, confident and culturally aware thinkers and empower students and teachers with a creative approach to education. Academy Award® winning filmmakers have participated each year – including James Cameron, Lee Unkrich, Gore Verbinski and Peter Ramsey, among others. SBIFF provides FREE transportation to students from Title I schools. This year, SBIFF is once again including an educational outreach program that will reach students in participating schools. Here, SBIFF staff and special guests will conduct an interactive film-related seminar within their own classroom! For the 29th Festival, SBIFF is thrilled to present Disney’s hit animated comedy, Frozen, featuring director Jennifer Lee, who will participate in a Q&A following the screenings with the students and talk about the craft of animated filmmaking. This annual free event, which takes place Friday, February 6 at the Arlington Theatre, is co-sponsored by The Towbes Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, Macy’s and Rotary Club of Goleta.
Official 2014 SBIFF Poster – The 2014 poster, once again created by the talented Barbara Boros, captures the essence of Santa Barbara while also highlighting the element of films and filmmaking. With Santa Barbara’s lush wine country serving as inspiration, which was also the backdrop for the Academy Award-winning film Sideways, the poster celebrates SCREEN CUISINE, a recent addition to our film sidebars and has been expanded due to its great popularity. Finally, the poster also ‘toasts’ a new partnership with our wine sponsor, Sunstone Vineyards & Winery.
The Tribute Awards were once again specially designed by Santa Barbara’s own Daniel Gibbings Jewelry. The Award is inspired by the iconic steeple of Santa Barbara’s historic Arlington Theatre and is handcrafted in metal and is 24 karat gold-plated, with a custom marble base. “We wanted to create an award that is not only quintessential to Santa Barbara’s beautiful culture and performing arts, but also embodied the passion and creativity we use in crafting our unique jewelry designs,” states CEO and Creative Director Daniel Gibbings and Setenay Ozdemir-Osman. “Just as the Arlington Theatre takes our imagination to new places, so do the visionary filmmakers and actors that are honored each year by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. We are truly honored to design and create all of the awards for SBIFF.”
AppleBox Family Films – SBIFF presents AppleBox, a FREE family film section during the mornings of the two weekends that bookend the festival – Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2 and on Saturday, February 8 and Sunday, February 9. 10-10-10 Student Screenwriting Competition and Filmmaking Competition – The Screenwriting Competition, sponsored by Final Draft, Inc. and The Riordan Foundation, is comprised of 10 students who were selected out of 67 submissions from Santa Barbara area high school and college students.
