2. Be a Mentor
Remember the first few weeks on campus? The first time navigating the dining hall? The first finals week? It all sucked! But now that you know the drill, you’re in a position to help others.
If you’re still living on campus (many universities have implemented a two-year mandatory campus residency plan as another initiative in the battle against the “slump”), reach out to some first-year students in your building and be a resource for them when they have questions. You could be their hero. Bonus points if they’re cute. And single. And you are, too….
3. Join A(nother) Club
You heard this all the time as a freshman. But how many clubs did you actually join? And how many are you still part of? And how active are you in them? The freshman year is a time for exploration.
The sophomore year is a time to start making decisions. Are you into community service? Recreational sports? Sci-fi? Chances are there’s a club for that on campus.
Check your university’s website for a listing of registered student organizations, and if you don’t see something that sparks your interest, contact the student affairs office for information on how to start your own. That by itself should keep you busy for a semester or two!
4. Immerse Yourself in Culture
Nearly every college and university offers some sort of cultural programming, from a few dozen exhibits, lectures and performances a year to hundreds of events each semester. Know who makes up the majority of the audience? Community members (especially elderly folks — they understand the value of free entertainment).
Know who usually doesn’t attend? Students (unless they’re receiving class credit for being there). It may not all be your cup of tea (or Red Bull)… but you’ll never know unless you try. Your student fees are paying for it anyway, so why not? Chances are you’ll discover something you really like. And if you’re lucky, there will be a reception afterwards. Free food? Score!
5. Keep the Freshman Mentality
Think back to your first semester. Did you miss a single class? Heck no! Ever turn in an assignment late? You didn’t dare. And you were at the library so much, you had your own personal seat (even if no one else knew that).
Sure, you know some areas now in which you might be able to slack off. But why? Despite all the other fun, amazing things about college, you’re there to learn. And someone — whether it’s you, your parents or a generous scholarship benefactor — is paying for it.
Get to class, spend some time studying and then worry about the rest. It’s called “priorities,” and you’ll be happy later that you learned to set them early in life.
It’s not difficult to fall into the “sophomore slump.” Following the tips above, however, will have you standing tall among your peers as you blaze the path into your junior year.
