Are you ready for the BEST Christmas ever? Check out this giveaway from sponsor NCircle Entertainment. One lucky reader will receive all 5 titles! These DVDs are perfect for stocking stuffers, small gift exchanges, or just watching on the road trip to get you to Grandma’s house. NCircle Entertainment is one of my favorite sources for kids’ movies. I never have to worry about my children seeing something that’s too mature or crude when the video is from NCircle!
My personal favorite from this collection is the Sid the Science Kid Ruler of Thumb ($6.99 retail). This cartoon is just too cute, but also encourages kids to think! There are lots of educational issues that tie into this video. Chores, charts, and science skills are explored in a very kid-friendly way. I love that Sid thinks out loud. This type of modeling is so important to help children develop metacognition. Sid’s classroom is really fun! The teacher’s active learning style will appeal to preschoolers.
My daughter loved watching The Wiggles when she was younger. I have to say that the songs are catchy even when I’m trying not to sing along! With Apples and Bananas ($9.99 retail), kids get to sing along to nursery rhymes. When my son was in Pre-K, he started to learn so many nursery rhymes. He often recites them when he’s playing; it’s so much fun to listen to him. In kindergarten he’s been learning more complex rhymes. For those children who have trouble with memorization, The Wiggles help to make this skill a breeze.
The Octonauts are always a hit at our house. Even my 10 year old (who insists that she’s too old for this) sneaks a peek when Deep Sea Mission is on ($12.99 retail). This particular DVD is perfect for Halloween without being too scary! Vampire Squid? Scary Spookfish? Yes, please.
The Cat in the Hat Show and Tell ($10.99 retail) is also just right for fall. One reason why I like this show is because it’s enthusiastically silly. The little puns are funny; little kids understand them, too. There aren’t many cartoons that have age-appropriate humor, but this one does. I’m not sure if any schools still have Show and Tell but this is a fun way to start the tradition at home if you want! Of course, the traditional rhymes and bouncy rhythm that we all love from The Cat are present in the DVD.
Animal Atlas ABC’s ($6.99 retail) would be a safe bet for the younger kiddos on your holiday list. It was a little too young for my 5 year old son. Those who are just learning their letters will probably enjoy this more. Its repetition helps kids develop sight recognition of letters. Also, the video encourages verbal interaction with the concepts.
