Okay say you’re writing a book about your life, but you have to start the narrative about today.  Write the first couple paragraphs.  How’s that for a question, Weber?!

We sleep on a futon mattress and it’s always raining when I wake up (usually in the afternoon).  The world moves too fast for a life lived so god damn slow, and I’d rather keep the curtains closed forever than acknowledge sunlight for even one second.  I used to be sad all the time, and now there’s this void in thought, like I just ought to be sad because it’s comfortable or something.  The first thing I feel are her frozen toes rubbing against the warm space between my arm and my rib cage.  I shiver, but I’m not sad.  My mind is open to new sensations.  I keep shivering.

It’s always raining or snowing in Michigan and the people reflect the weather patterns like a universal mirror.  Everybody is sour and bipolar and something is always bothering them.  College kids everywhere, and truth be told, it makes me feel a lot older than I actually am.  But then again, most things do.  If I don’t speak with a typical Iowan drawl, then I can blend right in.

“You’re not from here, are you?”  Asks everybody.

They just aren’t fun anymore.

Your face. I like that shit.

Are you a slob?

Absolutely.  I’m trying to be better, though.

I thought you quit music entirely Cody? That said, I agree fully with your sentiments on the illegal acquisition of recorded music. And celebrity culture pisses me off big time too, your statement that mainstream artists are pretty much products is absolutely bang-on.

Nah, I never said I was quitting music altogether.  I just don’t have the desire to be the drummer of any particular group.  Over the next few months, Kat and I are going to try to build up on our music equipment and (hopefully) I’ll be playing every instrument.  I’m a musical fascist, if it’s not done my way then it’s not going to get done.

Have you ever thought about becoming apart of a sub culture?

“I don’t care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members.”

Any advice for a young musician trying to develop his own style?

No matter what you do, you’ll have your own style.  Even if you consciously try to rip someone off, it’ll still end up stained by you.  The best tip I have is an easy one — Don’t worry about it.

I have to admit, even though I’ve been loving your recent work, it was nice to see a video from you. It just proves you don’t have to rant to make a video, I really enjoyed your view on changing perspectives :

I miss making rants sometimes, but I have to do something better and rants give me an excuse to be lazy.  If I don’t allow myself to make them, then I have to focus my efforts on to projects that matter more.

Hey Cody. When and how did you realize you wanted to be a professorial photographer, and do you have any advice for someone just starting out? Thanks!

This is going to sound pretentious (but honestly, what do I say that doesn’t?), honestly, I’ve always known.  Photography is the only outlet I have that I’ve consciously aimed to be better and made goals to force myself into a broader skill set.

There is so much injustice in America and everyone knows about it yet they are all complacent. Why do you think that we allow our rights to be stomped on at every corner and not do anything since we outnumber the rich and powerful by a HUGE proportion and I mean HUGE. We can beat them even if only half of us joined forces because there are just too many of us and they would get scared

People in America aren’t starving to death yet.  That’s the motivating factor.  Additionally, our generation is the most passive-aggressive one ever and nobody actually cares enough to say anything or stand up.

Plus, we already saw what happened to the Hippie movement.  The hippies were right, and it didn’t matter one bit that they were.  The world didn’t get better because of them or because of their ideology.  By the 1980’s, everyone forgot it existed at all.  Being right doesn’t mean anything.

Cody since you have decided to go back to college do you think that it will be beneficial for you in the long run? I mean you have said numerous times that the education system in this country is broken and you are actively participating in such a system and I would like to know how you feel about this.

After getting a pell grant, I’m almost paying nothing to get my Associate’s degree.  That’s the main reason I’m going for it now.  I’m in a college town, I might as well make the most of living here.

Please say anything about Star Wars or Blink-182 so I can validate my life.

I don’t like either.

Blink-182 never appealed to me and I never got into pop punk as a kid.  When they made their rise, I was neck-deep into bands like Motley Crue.  Blink-182 just seemed like Rock-Lite to me, and it felt like pussy music.  I didn’t get into it.

Star Wars is only popular because it’s nostalgic for your parents and now it’s nostalgic for you.  Nobody wants to admit it, but it’s the truth.  They aren’t very good.  My parents weren’t into Star Wars, so that means I never got into them.  It’d be the same for you.

Do you think you’re making better music now than when you were in Muldoon’s? Really digging the new stuff. OH YEAH, and make more Joy songs!

I don’t think it’s even fair to compare the two.  Muldoon’s Clever Girls was a weird punk / rock / alternative project.  The Shakes hasn’t even really blossomed yet.  Wait until I have some equipment behind me before we start comparing it with anything I’ve done in the past.  I have more fun playing the guitar than I do on any other instrument, though, and I’m kind of just giving myself away to that feeling.  I know I’m not as good at the guitar as I am on the drums, but that’s kind of the point, too.  I want to get better and there’s no way I can do that besides practicing and writing a ton.

It looks like your acoustic guitar is a right-handed one that has been restrung to suit a left-handed player (judging by the inverted pickguard). I’m also a left-handed guitarist and wanted to know if you’ve experienced any problems with restringing it for a lefty? I always fear strings will easily snap or some sort of problem on the guitar itself will occur consequently.

I have a tip to prevent that from happening.  Find the sharpest knife you can and carve a thicker notch in your bridge for the thicker strings.  It doesn’t have to be large enough to fit the entire string, just big enough to hold it in place to prevent snapping / detuning.  I’ve never had a problem with my method and buying a righty-guitar with the intention to invert it saves me hundreds of dollars every time I try to get a guitar.  For some reason, the left-handed model of any guitar is about $200 extra,  Fuck that.

perform a freestyle about whale dicks and beach towels?

Hung like a gnarly motherfucker back in jail
Swimming through the seas is this big-dicked whale
And he fucks all the lady fish right before he eats ‘em
‘cuz he gets real turned on by the taste of his jism,

The big dicked whale is the king of the ocean
A dick so big, that on the beach, is a commotion
For the big dicked whale with his breath, so foul
He fucks all the single ladies,

then steals their beach towels.
