The National Broadband Network continues to roll out across Corangamite, with around 37,800 premises to be serviced by either fixed line or fixed wireless under the 18-month rollout schedule.

In Torquay today to inspect NBN pre-construction works, Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull said that the Coalition’s fixed line rollout was seeing more premises passed every week.

“Since the Coalition government was elected, one of our chief priorities has been to get the NBN rollout moving faster, cheaper for taxpayers and more affordably for consumers,” Mr Turnbull said.

“Under our Government, NBN Co has more than tripled the reach of its fixed line network, now passing more than 909,000 premises nationwide.

“Across Australia, total active connections to the NBN’s various networks, including the fixed line and wireless networks and the interim satellite service now stand at 498,000.

“The national rollout plan released recently by NBN Co indicates that by mid-2016 one in every three homes and businesses across Australia will be able to connect to the NBN or have construction underway in their neighbourhoods.

Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said that with fixed line pre-construction kicking off in many towns, communities in Corangamite would see ongoing activity.

“Pre-construction has begun in Torquay, Jan Juc and Barwon Heads, and is scheduled for Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff in the coming months; this means that when operational, fixed line NBN in these locations will pass a total of 21,000 premises,” Ms Henderson said.

“In coming weeks, work will be visible in streets as pre-construction activity begins, such as the clearing of Telstra’s pits and ducts.

“The NBN will update its online maps in coming months to inform residents when physical construction of the network has begun, and again when the network will be ready for service.

Ms Henderson said that she was proud to have fought hard for better communications access for Corangamite communities.

“The NBN will deliver internet access that’s fast, reliable and affordable.

“In 2015, fast internet and reliable mobile phone access is so important for communities, businesses and families.

“The combination of a faster NBN rollout and $2.11m from our government to fund 10 new mobile phone base stations in Corangamite will make this region an even better place to live, work and raise a family,” Ms Henderson concluded.
