BARCELONA — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced that SnapPlanet from France won the prize for the best app at the Space App Camp in Barcelona, Spain.

For the third year in a row, startups and young talents representing five countries across Europe were challenged by SAP and the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop apps on SAP Cloud Platform that use Earth observation and business data. The apps demonstrate how the data can be used to support new business models and solutions advancing work in the healthcare, agriculture, media and entertainment and engineering sectors. The announcement was made at Mobile World Congress being held Feb. 27 to March 2.

Approximately 200 teams from the ESA startup network were evaluated for this year’s Space App Camp prize. The final round of competition narrowed the selection to the top five startup apps, representing two members from each team.

“The startup solutions seen today are strategic bets on radically new business, further increasing the value of the thriving Earth observation ecosystem managed by SAP and ESA,” said Carsten Linz, global head, Center for Digital Leadership, SAP. “This allows a seamless, data-driven business turning Big Data into smart data and creating exemplary customer and user value.”

“We know that our satellite data is key for a wide range of applications,” added Josef Aschbacher, director of Earth observation programs at ESA. “It surprises us every year how the participants come up with new ideas and new ways of integrating our data into these application areas. This both inspires to never stop developing new ideas and motivates to continue delivering data from space for the people on Earth.”

The teams participating in Space App Camp represented France, Portugal, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and competed for the “Best App of the Space App Camp” prize. The winning team, SnapPlanet, winning €5,000, will be considered for the SAP Startup Focus program. As part of its ongoing collaboration with ESA, SAP intends to work together with the startups incubating in ESA Business Incubation Centers across Europe. This collaboration aims to provide SAP with access to hundreds of new ventures.

The Center for Digital Leadership organization from SAP helps companies navigate through their digital transformation. Space App Camp is managed by the Center for Digital Leadership team at SAP. The camp was initiated by ESA and organized by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen.
