This week is Fiesta de Santa Fe, the time that celebrates the Spanish reconquest of Santa Fe after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. One of the highlights is the burning of Zozobra on Thursday night. Bring your sorrows to Old Man Gloom and see them go up in smoke,

Dining news:
Talented Santa Fe chef, James Campbell Caruso, owner of two popular Santa Fe tapas restaurants, La Boca and Taberna La Boca, has teamed up with Albuquerque’s historic Hotel Andaluz and will MAS, their new restaurant, MAS, in October. In addition to a full menu, MAS will offer Campbell Caruso’s signature food, tapas. The menu will focus on “fresh reinventions of traditional Spanish cuisine with an emphasis on locally-sourced foods and high-quality imported ingredients and spices.” Tapas will also be served in the hotel’s lobby and Ibiza, their rooftop bar. Caruso will also be the hotel’s Food and Beverage Director.

The Shake Foundation’s website says it’s coming soon. This project, by local restaurateur, Brian Knox, (chef/owner of the now defunct Aqua Santa), is opening what looks to be a take-out burger stand on a small lot at 631 Cerrillos Road just south of Paseo de Peralta. Their currently minimalist website, only says that they are “Dedicated to the Preservation of the Original Green Chile Cheeseburger”. Your guess about what exactly means is as good as mine as no one’s yet answered our request for information.
There’s been a lot of talk around town this week after it was announced that Garrett’s Desert Inn owes almost 2.8 million dollars on a 2007 loan. The note was due in 2012. RiverSource Life Insurance Company, the note-holder, has filed a foreclosure complaint in state District Court. Garrett’s, you may remember, is the new home to what used to be called Bobcat Bite (and will always be that to some) now rechristened Santa Fe Bite. The iconic eatery were forced out of its long-time Old Las Vegas Highway home in June and reopened at the inn on August 15th. The good news; according to a reliable source there is a lease so the popular burger spot won’t be going anywhere soon.

And speaking of Santa Fe Bite, local pastry queen, Andrea Clover, formerly the Executive Pastry at the Inn and Spa at Loretto has gone out on her own. Her new business, Chez Dré, is busy! Besides doing desserts and running her own mini-pastry shop at The Bite where she’s offering both desserts to diners and take-home treats for walk-in customers, she’s got a bunch of other irons in the fire. Besides some special projects and custom orders, this enterprising pastry artist has her baked goods in a few dining rooms around town. Ounce word’s out, we suspect that her client list will grow rapidly. Her creations are beautiful as well as delicious. You can order your next cake from Chez Dré for that special occasion or, just because.

There’s bad news and good news. First the bad: Babaluu’s Cocina Cubana, who’s been out in Lone Butte on NM Rte 14 for the last few years, will be closing. They don’t yet have an exact date yet. The good news: they are looking for a new spot and plan to reopen in 2014. More bad news, it may not be in Santa Fe. Albuquerque and other localities are in the running. For now, they will be open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays; adding Thursdays and Mondays if they get enough advance reservations. Check with the restaurant before you go. Meanwhile, they’re available for catering, private parties, pig roasts etc.

Santa Fe Food:
We met chile guru, Dave DeWitt, the first year we were in New Mexico. Steve had written an award-winning grilling and smoking cookbook and was asked to be a guest chef at the National Fiery Foods and Barbecue Show in Albuquerque. DeWitt will be at the Santa Fe Farmers Market on Saturday, September 14th from 9am to noon to promote his newly released series of six paperback books, The Pepper Pantry. The event is being sponsored by local independent bookseller, Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse. DeWitt was the founder and editor of Fiery Food Magazine and was an acknowledged expert in the world of chiles. He’s written over 45 books. Join him for some pepper-cooking fun, pepper facts, questions from the crowd on growing and cooking peppers and of course, a book signing.
Santa Fe music:
New Zealander, Donna Dean, will be at the Music Room at Garrett’s Desert Inn (311 Old Santa Fe Trail) on Friday, September 6th at 7:30 pm. Dean, who plays country/bluegrass will be joined by her versatile band of three: John Egenes, Jane Clark and John Dodd. Between them they play mandolin/dobro, guitar, fiddle and bass. It should be a rollicking evening. Local singer/songwriter, Jono Manson opens the evening. Tickets, for the show, brought to you by the Santa Fe Performance Exchange, are $15 in advance available online or $20 at the door.
The Santa Fe Pro Musica opens its 32nd season with a recital from renowned pianist and composer Conrad Tao on Thursday, September 19th at 7:30pm at the St. Francis Auditorium at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. Tao will also join the Santa Fe Pro Musica Orchestra under the leadership of Conductor Thomas O’Connor, in concert on Saturday, September 21st at 6pm and Sunday, September 22nd at 3pm at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. The orchestra will perform Haydn’s Symphony No. 83 in G Minor and will be joined by Tao for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 in E-Flat Major, K. 271 and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Minor where he will be joined by Brian Shaw on trumpet

Santa Fe art:
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum will be partially closed from Thursday, September 12th through Thursday, October 3rd. During this time, the museum will offer free tours of the nearby Georgia O’Keeffe Research Center (135 Grant Avenue) from Monday to Saturday at 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 2:30pm. They are closing to change exhibitions. The current show, Georgia O’Keeffe in New Mexico: Architecture, Katsinam, and the Land runs through Wednesday, November 11th. The next exhibition Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe and Lake George will open on Friday, October 4th. The show, in collaboration with the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, NY, will feature over 55 works (including a few rarely seen ones) painted in and of Lake George during her time there from 1918 until the mid 1930s. The show will tun through January 26, 2014.

Wax Works: The Art of Hot and Cold Wax Technique, an exhibition of hot and cold wax paintings by three artists, will open on Friday, September 13, 2013 from 5 to 7pm at the Karan Ruhlen Gallery. The show features the encaustic artwork of Martha Rea Baker, Ellen Koment, and Mary Long-Postal. The show runs through September 26th.

Santa Fe Theater
It’s time again for the annual Fiesta Melodrama at the Santa Fe Playhouse. It opened last Thursday and runs through September 8th. The annual show, which includes the traditional hero, villain and heroine (in this case, two) spoofs the local scene. The first one took place in the 1920s. Dates, times and ticketing information can be found on the Playhouse’s website.
