Upcoming Golf Club Improvement Projects
Throughout August, a number of improvement projects will commence at the Golf Club, with the majority of works focused on enhancing the golf courses. The upcoming works are outlined below:
The Pines bunker upgrade
The Club is continuing The Pines bunker upgrades which began on Monday 22 August. The improvements already implemented have focused on upgrading existing bunkers that are to remain in place under the Palmer Design Masterplan. Works will now commence on the fairway bunkers on holes 9, 11 and 17 with a number of bunkers being deleted and new bunkers added. This process will take approximately two weeks, with any areas undergoing works clearly marked as GUR.
The Palms bunker refurbishment
Following a recent audit of the bunkers on The Palms golf course, there have been a number of bunkers identified that require repair. This repair process began on Monday 1 August and will continue for the next 16 weeks, focusing on the bunkers requiring critical works and all bunkers on holes 1 to 8. Bunkers undergoing works will be marked as GUR as required.
The Pines chipping area
The Pines chipping area at the southern end of the driving range will be unavailable for use for approximately 10-12 weeks. Work has commenced on a new chipping green and practice bunker construction. For those Members wishing to practice their bunker game, practice hole 3 or The Palms short game practice facility will be available.
The Country Club upgrade
Last week work began on the first stage of The Country Club upgrade with the development of an outside deck located adjacent to the existing Michael’s Restaurant and Grille Bar. This area will take approximately six weeks to complete and will increase the Club’s capacity to host events at The Country Club, whilst also improving the existing amenity for Country Club Members and visiting golfers. Further works to the interior are yet to be confirmed and further updates will be provided as required.
The Pines Practice Hole 2 tee upgrade
The Pines practice hole 2 (P2) will have its tee box enlarged by approximately 1500 square metres, allowing Members to practice shots ranging from 40m – 150m distance, a significant improvement to the existing practice facilities at the Club. P2 will be out of play for approximately 10-12 weeks while the upgrade takes place. Works began last week.

Club Fitting and Demo Days
Using equipment that is custom fit to your swing is invaluable to your game, no matter your skill level.
The Club regularly hosts fitting days on The Pines driving range, giving you the opportunity to not only trial the latest golf equipment and discuss differences in products with qualified professional fitters, but more so to be custom fit with the right clubs for you.
Professional fitters from Titleist and Ping both use Trackman technology, which provides accurate data and instant analysis to compare your current equipment to the latest equipment on the market.
View details regarding upcoming fitting days here.
Titleist SM6 Vokey Wedge Fitting
The golf club will be hosting a Titleist SM6 wedge fitting afternoon on Thursday 15 September.
A proper wedge fitting starts with ensuring the golfer has the precise loft, bounce and grind for his or her game.
Accurate distance-gapping is a critical step in selecting the best wedge combination for your golf bag. Mr Bob Vokey recommends 4°-6° of loft separation between your wedges, resulting in 10-15 metre gaps. Most players will benefit from carrying four wedges, which leads to tighter distance gaps and more full swings.
Date: Thursday 15 September 2016
Time: 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Location: The Pines chipping green
Bookings: Bookings can be made via the online tee sheet

Bunkers on holes 4, 5, 10 and 16 will have two small blue lines to indicate the place to enter and exit the bunker, with some bunkers having several access points. Bunker rakes are to be placed on a flat area in the bunker as close to the access point as possible, but away from any bunker edges.
We appreciate your co-operation throughout this trial period.

After a special Whisky Tasting Night on Thursday 28 July, the Club is excited to be featuring Kakubin Whisky throughout August.
Kakubin’s light, sweet aroma with a crisp finish differs from every other whisky in the world. By blending a wide variety of whiskies, Suntory succeeded in making a delicate drop with balance and versatility.
The Kakubin Highball, which is made with Kakubin whisky, fresh lemon and topped with soda water, is what many Japanese order when they raise their glasses for the first drink of the night. This overarching enjoyment of the Kakubin experience is the result of true Japanese craftsmanship in a unique climate, giving Kakubin its finely blended flavour.
Kakubin and Kakubin Highball $7.5
Featured Winery August – Wine Maker Neil Pike
This month, we introduce you to Pikes as our featured wine of the month for August.
Pikes Vintners is an iconic family owned and operated winery set amongst the hills and valleys of South Australia’s beautiful Clare Valley.
Established in 1984, the winery and vineyards are situated in the historic and picturesque Polish Hill River sub-region on the eastern side of the Clare Valley. The climate in this area is cooler and the soils are quite different compared to the rest of the region, imparting distinctive flavours and aromas to the wines.
Pikes Los Companeros Shiraz Tempranillo
This Shiraz is soft and rich with tannins and acid, married nicely with the ripe dark berry fruit flavours.
Bottle $32 | Glass $7
Pikes Luccio Pinot Grigio
The Pikes Luccio is a fresh, zingy blend of Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, with gentle stone fruit, mineral flavours and a light and refreshing palate.
Bottle $32 | Glass $7
These wines are available while stocks last.
Weekly Members’ Draw
The Members drawn in last week’s draw were Bruce Townsend and James Ramsay. Bruce and James were not present therefore this week’s draw value will jackpot to $1300.
This Sunday there will be two chances to find a winner. In order to claim the Members’ Draw, the winner must be present in Lakeview Bar at the time of the draw. If the winner is not present, the draw will jackpot to $1400 dining credit next week.
Royal Femantle Golf Club, Western Australia
For those Members planning a trip to Western Australia, be sure to include a round of golf at our affiliate club Royal Fremantle Golf Club in your itinerary.
Royal Fremantle is one of the few golf clubs that still occupies its original site. The course can be tamed on a still day, but when the prevailing sea breeze, colloquially called the “Fremantle Doctor”, arrives after midday, only the best swings survive.
Royal Fremantle, at 6168m, is not long by modern standards. Plans are in place to lengthen some tees as part of regular course maintenance and development plans, but this will be done only in keeping with the original intentions; to provide a course for all players and to encourage participation in the sport. Royal Fremantle is not solely about providing a championship venue for professional tournament play to be utilised once a year. The course is well maintained with tidy tee boxes, clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best in the country all year round, and Bent grass greens that are deceptively quick. However, when a shot goes astray the penalty is fair, and there is always a chance to manufacture a shot from under the trees to get the ball back into play.
Royal Fremantle Golf Club is a beautiful Members’ style golf club that you will truly enjoy. Green fees are $70 per Member including cart hire, with a maximum of five rounds per year permitted.
Upon booking a round of golf at a reciprocal or affiliate golf club, please contact Laura Liebenau to request your letter of introduction.
