Golf Course Renovations

Details of this year’s golf course renovations have been confirmed and will take place on the following dates:

The Pines golf course

Monday 31 October until Friday 4 November 2016

Available for play from Saturday 5 November 2016

The Palms golf course

Monday 9 January 2017 until Friday 13 January 2017

Available for play from Saturday 14 January 2017

Golf course renovations process

Stage 1: Verti-cutting (scarifying)

Removes matt and thatch

Promotes new shoot and root growth

Helps in the control of disease outbreaks

Stage 2: Aerification (coring)

Improves drainage

Removes matt and thatch

Relieves compaction

Increases oxygen in the root zone

Stage 3: Topdressing

Improves drainage

Restores and improves the putting surface

Stage 4: Fertilising

Assists with plant recovery

Improves soil structure through soil amendments

Increases microbial activity

The golf course benefits from renovations as they improve overall plant health, reduce surface drainage, relieve compaction, offset and displace sodium and promote overall new growth in vegetation.

The renovations our Golf Course Maintenance team undertake are necessary in order to continue to provide the two high-standard golf courses consistently throughout the year. The impact to the conditions of the course should see a full recovery to optimal playing conditions in six weeks, depending on weather.

The proposed timing of golf course renovations is not taken lightly. Your patience and co-operation throughout the renovation periods will be greatly appreciated.

Ladies’ Caddy and Pennant Players Trophy

While 56 Ladies were met with slightly windy conditions for the 2016 Ladies’ Caddy and Pennant Players’ Trophy, the weather did not hinder the scoring.

The A Grade players were tightly contested with Marie Manning winning on countback over Irene Hall, both on 36 points. Third place went to Faye Williams with 35 points on countback.

Keiko Lim managed to take out B Grade on a countback as well, matching Deirdre McAlpine on 36 points. Jenny Thackeray managed to lock in third place with her score of 33 points.

C Grade saw the best score of the day with Joanna Lee notching up an impressive 41 points, an impressive 7 points clear of runner-up Sue Lethbridge on 34 points.

Nonetheless, the major trophy for the day was for the caddies and players of the 2016 Ladies’ Pennant Series.

Irene Hall produced the best round of the Pennant players with her score of 36 points.

Of the caddies who contested, Robyn McDonald was the best with 28 points.

The golf course was presented in fantastic condition with full credit to our Golf Course Maintenance team.

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Pennant series and we look forward to another successful season in 2017.

Men’s Foursomes Championship

25 September will see the commencement of the 2016 Men’s Foursomes Championship, a 36-hole Stroke Play event.

Defending Champions Paul Smerdon and Troy Devine will be looking to make it three-in-a-row if they can clinch the 2016 title.

Both players are in fantastic form playing off scratch and +1, respectively, and will be tough to beat.

TeeNet Member Service

Our golf bookings provider MiClub is pleased to offer Sanctuary Cove Members a new service within your Member portal.

In your personal golf information section on the right, you will notice a new category called TeeNet.  TeeNet is an online tee time search engine, allowing you to view tee times from over 100 golf clubs and courses around Australia, without paying booking fees.

Ongoing Golf Club Improvement Projects

The Golf Club has continued with a number of ongoing projects throughout September. With the majority of works occurring on the golf course and practice areas, the below summary is provided to update all Members as to their progress:

The Pines Bunker Upgrade

Works are now completed on the bunkers on holes 9 and 11 of The Pines golf course and new turf has been laid in place of the old bunkers on the 11th. New fairway lines have had their cut. New turf area will be fertilised and topdressed over the coming weeks. All completed improvements have been conducted in line with the Palmer Design Masterplan and any areas that are still recovering from the works have been marked GUR. These bunkers will be brought back into play in the coming weeks.

The Palms Bunker Refurbishment

Over the past six weeks, works have been ongoing to restore a number of bunkers to their former condition. Restoration has been completed on all bunkers deemed critical on The Palms golf course and works
have begun on the remainder of the bunkers on the front nine.
are now complete on holes 1-7. Works include checking current sand depths and repairing any damaged matting.

The Pines Chipping Area

Works to The Pines short game area at the far end of The Pines driving range are continuing to schedule. All turf surrounding the green has been laid and the green itself has been stolonised in the past month. The new green will take approximately a further six weeks to become established and of a suitable condition for use. Daily maintenance of the area has started this week. For those Members wishing to practice their bunker game, practice hole 3 and The Palms short game practice facility are available.

The Pines Practice Hole 2 Tee Upgrade

The Pines practice hole 2 (P2) has had significant changes made to the teeing ground in the past few weeks. The teeing ground has been enlarged by approximately 1500 square metres, providing an area for Members to practice shots ranging from 40m – 150m. All turf has been laid in the area and the facility is expected to reopen in early November.

Mixed Social Sunday Golf – Results

The Sunday Mixed Golf event was played on The Pines golf course on Sunday 18 September in a 12:30pm shotgun start. The day’s format was an Irish Four Ball Stableford,

While wet weather threatened the event early and quickly reduced the size of the field, those teams that persevered were met with a relatively rain-free afternoon of golf.

Bernie Croft, John McGreal, Bruce Spencer and Greg Milliner were victorious in the modified event by only one point. Their team score of 79 points edged out the team of Anne and Rob Hill and Jenny and Peter Leeson, who secured second place with 78 points.

Bernie Croft and Wendy Nelson won the nearest the pins on the 16th hole.

The next Social Sunday event will be a Modified Lone Ranger to be played on 2 October.

Modified Lone Ranger

A four-player team event. On each hole, one player in each foursome is designated the “Lone Ranger”. That designation rotates throughout the round; for example, Player A has it on the first hole, B on the second, C on the third, D on the fourth, then back to A on the fifth and so on. For a shotgun start, Player A is still the Lone Ranger on holes 1, 5, 9, 13 and 17 on the course no matter which hole the group starts on. In Lone Ranger, three scores per hole are added together for the team score. One of those three scores must be from the Lone Ranger. So on each hole, the team score will be the score of the player designated the Lone Ranger, plus the best two scores of the other three players on the team.

Repairing Divots

Repairing divots is an essential part of keeping our golf courses in their best possible condition. Besides repairing one’s own divots, it can be of great assistance to further repair those overseen by others, as long as pace of play is adhered to. For best results, it is recommended to repair fairway divots in the following manner:

First step: Knock all four edges of the divot into the centre with an iron.  This assists with quicker recovery of divots.

Second step:  Fill in the divot with sand, being careful not to overfill it.

Third step: Level the sand off by lightly scraping it with your golf shoe to complete the divot repair.

The Pines Bunker Access Points

The Match and Greens Committee will commence trials using bunker access points on four holes of The Pines golf course.

Bunkers on holes 4, 5, 10 and 16 will have two small blue lines to indicate the place to enter and exit the bunker, with some bunkers having several access points. Bunker rakes are to be placed on a flat area in the bunker as close to the access point as possible, but away from any bunker edges.

We appreciate your co-operation throughout this trial period.
