Men’s Stroke Play Club Championship

A Grade

Mitchell Varley got off to a hot start in the Men’s Stroke Play Club Championship firing an even par 72 to be a 2-shot leader after round 1 from defending champion Paul Smerdon.  Round 2 saw some extremely tough conditions where Mitchell and Glen Thomson fired equal best rounds of the day with 74.

Round 3 was also contested in testing conditions and Mitchell maintained his lead with a solid round of 74 to be 6 shots clear of Glen Thomson and 8 shots clear of Paul Blake heading into the final round.  This fourth round was a true test of nerves for 16-year-old Mitchell, after Glen Thomson clawed within 2 shots with four holes to play.  Mitchell steadied with a great birdie on 17 to be a 5-shot winner over both Paul Blake and Glen Thomson.  Matt McNicol was the nett winner for 2016 with a total of 304 for four rounds.
