Men’s B Grade Interclub Pennant Team

Congratulations to the Men’s B Grade Interclub Pennant team for an outstanding result in their competition this year.

The Men’s B Grade Interclub Pennant team did not only have to work extremely hard to make the final, but they needed luck on their side as well. Being in 4th place with one game to go in the home and away series, the Men needed to beat the Mount Tamborine team at Sanctuary Cove by no less than 6-0. In addition, and out of their control, Surfers Paradise had to defeat Tally Valley, to then cement a spot in the final for the Sanctuary Cove Men. They fought hard, proudly getting the 6-0 win, and Surfers Paradise obliged by defeating Tally Valley, sending the Sanctuary Cove team to the final despite the narrowest of margins.

The final was held on Sunday against Palmer Gold Coast at Southport Golf Club, and proved to be a nail-biting finish. Matches were even all day and could have favoured either team at any time.

Elden Fryers, Michael Turner and Bruce Munro secured three great wins, while Rob Thompson fought back from 4 down to successfully halve his match on the 18th, gaining a crucial half point which lifted the team to a 3.5 to 2.5 victory.

Results on the day were as follows:

1 Elden Fryers – won 3 & 2

2 Wayne McDonald – lost 1 down

3 Scott Herbert – lost 3 & 2

4 Bruce Munro – won 1 up

5 Michael Turner – won 3 & 1

6 Rob Thompson – halved

A special mention to the following players who also represented the team this year: Paul Greaves, Gary Kotzur, Mark Brown, Paul Shewen and Team Captain Wayne Kirby.

Men’s C Grade Interclub Pennant Team

Congratulations to the Men’s C Grade Interclub Pennant team for winning the final on Sunday against Palmer Gold Coast.

After all six matches were completed scores were at 3-3, forcing a sudden death play-off.

Under the GCDGA rules for the final, this meant that Peter Cohen and his opponent from Palmer Gold Coast would need to go into a sudden death play-off beginning on the 1st hole.

As they headed down the 1st hole, closely followed by a supportive crowd, Peter was able to stay calm and play his steady game, while the occasion appeared to test the nerves of the Palmer Gold Coast player.  Peter went on to win the play-off in very fine style without the need to go to the second play-off hole. He declined offers by fellow team mates to be “chaired” back to the clubhouse, showing great composure.

Besides the six players listed below who played in the final, John Venn, John Freeburn, Verne Harland, Colin Vianello, Joe Stanley-Hunt, Conrad Cowie and Trevor Reed also played throughout the season.  All 13 players experienced success by winning at least one game they played.

Final results were as follows:

1. Peter Cohen – lost

2. Ian Mathieson (Outgoing Captain) – won

3. Kyle Fryers – lost

4. John Chapman – lost

5. Rob Tingey – won

6. Bernie Croft – won

Super Senior Pennant Series

On Monday 5 September the Men’s Super Senior Pennant team continued their recent success with a 4-2 victory over Burleigh Golf Club at Surfers Paradise Golf Club.

The Super Senior Pennant series has been closely contested this year and Monday’s game proved no different with most matches only decided on the last few finishing holes.

The day’s results were as follows:

Bill Perske – won 1 up

John McGreal – lost 4 & 3

Max Leslie – won 2 & 1

Wayne McDonald – lost 4 & 2

Alan Mercer – won 1 up

Barry Ridden – won 3 & 2

The Sanctuary Cove team will next play Surfers Paradise at Sanctuary Cove on Monday 12 September.

Senior Pennant

After a superb start to the season, the Men’s Senior Pennant team suffered their first loss, losing a close game to Arundel Hills Country Club 4-2.

With most games very close at the half-way point, this match could have swayed either way.

The day’s results were as follows:

Chris Smale – won 3 & 1

Marshall Leigh – won 2 up

Floyd Evans – lost 3 & 2

Paul Hibberd – lost 2 & 1

Bill Bell – lost 3 & 2

Craig Delianis – lost 1 down

A special mention to Chris and Marshall for remaining undefeated to date this season.

The team still remains in a great position with three rounds left to be played. On Monday 12 September they will play Lakelands Golf Club at Links Hope Island at 7:30am.

Ongoing Golf Club Improvement Projects

The Golf Club has continued with a number of ongoing projects throughout September. With the majority of works occurring on the golf course and practice areas, the below summary is provided to update all Members as to their progress:

The Pines Bunker Upgrade

Works are now complete on the bunker works on holes 9 and 11 of The Pines. All completed improvements have been conducted in line with the Palmer Design Masterplan and any areas that are still recovering from the works have been marked GUR.

The Palms Bunker Refurbishment

Over the past four weeks, works have been ongoing to restore a number of bunkers to their former condition. Work has been completed on all bunkers deemed critical on The Palms and over the next three weeks, the remainder of the bunkers on the front nine will be repaired as required. This assessment includes checking current sand depths and repairing any damaged matting.

The Pines Chipping Area

Works to The Pines short game area at the far end of The Pines driving range are continuing to schedule. All turf surrounding the green has been laid and the green itself has been stolonised in the past month. The new green will take approximately a further 2 months to become established and of a suitable condition for use. For those Members wishing to practice their bunker game, practice hole 3 or The Palms short game practice facility is available.

The Pines Practice Hole 2 Tee Upgrade

The Pines practice hole 2 (P2) has had significant changes made to the teeing ground in the past few weeks. The teeing ground has been enlarged by approximately 1500 square metres, providing an area for Members to practice shots ranging from 40m – 150m. All turf has been laid in the area and the facility is expected to reopen in early November.

Mixed Social Sunday Golf

The next Sunday Mixed Golf event will be played on The Pines golf course on Sunday 18 September in a 12:30pm shotgun start.

The day’s format will be an Irish Four Ball Stableford, for which bookings are now available via the online tee sheet.

Following golf, enjoy Sunday Casual Dining in Lakeview Bar, as well as the Weekly Members’ Draw.

Rules for an Irish Four Ball Stableford:

A four-player team event. Each player plays the whole round as a Stableford event. Team scoring is based on the hole being played. With a shotgun start, on the first hole played only the highest score counts, on the second hole, the two (2) highest scores count and on the third hole played the three (3) highest scores count. The fourth hole reverts to one (1) score counting and so on. The winning team has the highest aggregate score.

The Palms Gardens Working Party – Volunteers Required

The Club is calling for Member volunteers to participate in a series of working bees on The Palms golf course gardens.

This is open to all male and female Members kind enough to give up some of their own time.  The planned schedule is as follows:

Tuesday 13 September – 8am-midday

Tuesday 20 September – 8am-midday

Works would be completed under the supervision of one to two garden staff with a team leader for each group. Groups would work their way through each garden starting at hole 1. While work will be physical, it will by no means be back-breaking.

It will consist of trimming, picking up debris and planting small grass and native shrubs in allocated places.  The only requirements on the day would be to wear long trousers, a shirt, a hat and gloves, and of course to bring a willing heart.

Should you wish to take part in one of the working bees or wish to receive further details, please register your interest with one of the following team leaders:

John Lee – jjlee55@hotmail.com

Peter Leeson – jmleeson@telairmail.com.au

Drinks and lunch will be provided each day.

Club Fitting and Demo Days

Using equipment that is custom fit to your swing is invaluable to your game, no matter your skill level.

The Club regularly hosts fitting days on The Pines driving range, giving you the opportunity to not only trial the latest golf equipment and discuss differences in products with qualified professional fitters, but more so to be custom fit with the right clubs for you.

Professional fitters from Titleist and Ping both use Trackman technology, which provides accurate data and instant analysis to compare your current equipment to the latest equipment on the market.

View details regarding upcoming fitting days here.

Titleist SM6 Vokey Wedge Fitting

The golf club will be hosting a Titleist SM6 wedge fitting afternoon on Thursday 15 September.

A proper wedge fitting starts with ensuring the golfer has the precise loft, bounce and grind for his or her game.

Accurate distance-gapping is a critical step in selecting the best wedge combination for your golf bag. Mr Bob Vokey recommends 4°-6° of loft separation between your wedges, resulting in 10-15 metre gaps. Most players will benefit from carrying four wedges, which leads to tighter distance gaps and more full swings. For every set of wedges purchased (3 or more), Members will receive a complimentary Titleist cap.

Date: Thursday 15 September 2016
Time: 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Location: The Pines chipping green
Bookings: Bookings can be made via the online tee sheet

Repairing Divots

Repairing divots is an essential part of keeping our golf courses in their best possible condition. Besides repairing one’s own divots, it can be of great assistance to further repair those overseen by others, as long as pace of play is adhered to. For best results, it is recommended to repair fairway divots in the following manner:

First step: Knock all four edges of the divot into the centre with an iron.  This assists with quicker recovery of divots.

Second step:  Fill in the divot with sand, being careful not to overfill it.

Third step: Level the sand off by lightly scraping it with your golf shoe to complete the divot repair.

The Pines Bunker Access Points

The Match and Greens Committee will commence trials using bunker access points on four holes of The Pines golf course.

Bunkers on holes 4, 5, 10 and 16 will have two small blue lines to indicate the place to enter and exit the bunker, with some bunkers having several access points. Bunker rakes are to be placed on a flat area in the bunker as close to the access point as possible, but away from any bunker edges.

We appreciate your co-operation throughout this trial period.
