Handicap Match Play Championship Finals
The Pines golf course was in superb condition on a cold winter’s day for the finals of the 2016 Handicap Match Play Championships. Great crowds enjoyed outstanding golf with all matches played in fantastic spirit.
Men’s A Grade
Greg Duguid played against Jason Gibson in the final, in which solid early play saw Greg 4-up through 7 holes. Jason Gibson rallied and brought the match back to 1-up after 11 holes, meaning it could have gone either way.
Nonetheless, Greg proved too consistent in the end and became the 2016 Men’s Handicap Match Play A Grade Champion with a final score of 2 & 1.
Men’s B Grade
Gary Kotzur and Allan Thompson played out a very close encounter in the B Grade final. Gary demonstrated slightly better skill to defeat Allan with a 2 & 1 victory.
Men’s C Grade
Oscar Groeneveld and Trevor Reed competed in a hard-fought match in the C Grade final. This match was close throughout the front 9, but with a final 3 & 1 score, Trevor Reed defended his title and won the Men’s Handicap Match Play C Grade Championship for the 2nd straight year.
Ladies’ A Grade
Shirley Dean got off to a hot start against Kristy Oswin, leading 6-up after 9 holes. The early deficit proved too much and Shirley Dean won the Ladies’ Handicap Match Play A Grade Championship with a convincing 7 & 5 victory.
Ladies’ B Grade
Georgina Sievers and Christina Lee battled in the Ladies’ B Grade final, which saw Georgina take a 2-up lead through 9 holes. Georgina successfully extended her lead, eventually winning 5 & 3.
Ladies’ C Grade
Gail Oswin and Pennie Hepher played in the Ladies’ C Grade final. Gail started strongly and lead throughout the front 9, continuing her solid play into the back 9. With a 4 & 3 win, Gail became the 2016 Ladies’ Handicap Match Play C Grade Champion.
Congratulations to this year’s winners and finalists, and thank you to the referees Judy McDonald, Clare Kirby, Greg Herring, Alan Lock, and Warwick Keene for dedicating their time to assist with the matches.

Entering Bunkers
Raking bunkers is not only a very important part of golf course etiquette, but raking bunkers correctly ensures you and other golfers following have the best possible lie when playing out of both fairway and greenside bunkers. To rake bunkers correctly, the below steps should be followed:
Step 1: When playing a bunker shot, ensure you enter the bunker at a low point or flat area, to avoid disruption or damage to the face of the bunker.
Step 2: After playing the shot, begin raking the sand over the areas disrupted by footprints and by the divot where the ball lay. Rake the sand towards you ensuring you don’t rake too much sand. The goal is to leave the sand as flat and even as possible when you exit the bunker.
Step 3: When leaving the bunker, ensure all footmarks and divots are raked and place the rake on a flat spot in the bunker, facing the direction in which the hole is played. This will reduce the chance of a ball coming to rest in a bad lie next to the rake.

Featured Craft Beer July – Ruby Tuesday
While thinking about a name for their new amber ale, inspiration was found from Neil Whittorn, the Matilda Bay Brewing Company Manager. It is well known that Neil’s Walkman only plays Rolling Stones tapes, and when it was connected to the brewery’s sound system, the first song that played was Ruby Tuesday.
Ruby Tuesday is made with four different specialty malts. These are short roasted at high temperatures producing crystallised starches, which then combine to produce a rich ruby hue with toffee apple and creamy malt flavours lingering on the front palate.
Schooner $7 | Pot $4.5
