It might sound like a gimmick but Frisbee golf is a real sport that started in the 70’s in the USA and is also known as disc golf. It is played much like traditional golf but instead of a ball and clubs you use a disc, better known to us as its brand name Frisbee. The Frisbee is thrown from a tee area to an elevated metal basket. The player then progresses down the fairway; he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw has landed. Like traditional golf, there are trees, shrubs and terrain changes providing obstacles to navigate which certainly adds to the fun. Unlike traditional golf you don’t need to rent a cart and it’s designed for people of all ages, males and females and does not require a bank loan to play!

There are over 4,000 courses globally and there is even a Professional Disc Gold Association to join, you can check them out at www.pdga.com . The baskets on this course are built to professional specifications and details of this and many more amazing facts are all to be found on this website.

Nigel opened his first Frisbee golf course in 2004 on the old monkey theatre road but sadly closed in 2006 to pursue other business interests such as his outside catering company and his pizza delivery service. However, Nigel, a keen player himself, has always missed his Frisbee golf course and a few weeks ago reopened it in Maenam on the road that runs parallel to the ring road between soi 5 and the Santiburi golf club. The new course has 9 holes, but you are welcome to go around twice if you fancy doing 18. Coconuts show you the way around the course and teeing off can be done from the blue coconuts if you are something of an expert, red ones if you are new to the game and white ones if you are a child. For those of you that don’t know

Nigel he is amazingly friendly and always on hand to give you help and advice on how to get those INNOVA golf discs in the basket more often than they end up in a tree. There are three to choose from, drivers, mid-range and putting discs and Nigel will explain to you which ones do what. Frisbee golf is great fun there are so many sports these days that you feel you can not join in as a beginner but that is certainly not the case here. The par three course is pretty doable even for total beginners to the sport and the course is littered with fruit trees that offer shade on a hot sunny day.

The course is open most days, if you want to play you can just call Nigel on 0816767754, the cost of playing is just 100 baht and you can play all day if you want to. Nigel has refreshments in his ‘club house’ and if there are a few of you playing he is happy to put on a BBQ for you, call him to discuss offers and prices. He can accommodate up to twenty if you fancy a long afternoon of fabulous food and fun and if you fancy getting involved in a tournament drop us a line at the Samui Times as we are putting together a competition that will take place next month.
