The South African International Music Mobility Fund (SAIMMF) is a joint one-year funding programme established by the SAMRO Foundation and the British Council. The SAIMMF offers opportunities for professional musicians and music industry professionals in South Africa to build links with artists, organisations and/or music professionals in Southern African countries and the UK.
The programme is designed to support musicians and music professionals with an established practice in South Africa, but who have carried out little or no work internationally.
The objectives of the programme are to:
Support professional relationship building between the music sectors across Southern Africa and with the UK
(Eligible countries for projects are United Kingdom, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles)
Encourage the mobility of South African music and musicians
Develop artistic and professional capacity
Support ongoing creativity and innovation in South African music through new experiences
The fund is designed to help musicians and music industry professionals build on already established domestic success and develop connections, markets and audiences in Southern Africa and the UK for their work.
The programme is open to individuals and organisations:
Who have received recognition for their work in South Africa
Whose work will benefit from launching better international networks –either musically/creatively or in terms of developing an audience for their work
Who can demonstrate an interest in their work from an overseas partner or host
Who have little or no international experience
(For established artists and arts professionals with international experience projects will be considered if they feature the creation of new opportunities for artists and arts professionals either in South Africa or host countries.)
1.How much money can you ask for?
You may request up to ZAR 40,000. This amount must not exceed 80% of the total costs of the project. In exceptional cases, the grant may cover the entire eligible costs of the project if this is deemed essential to carry it out. If that is the case, the applicant must justify the request for full financing in the grant application form.
2.Who may request the grants?
Grants for individuals are available to: musicians, managers, promoters, producers, agents, groups (one member will need to take the lead and have the main responsibility for managing the application and any grant). All people participating in the project must be over 18 years old.
Grants for organisations are available to: music organisations and businesses (both for profit and non-profit), record labels, agencies, forums, associations, partnerships, local, regional and national organisations, groups of organisations (one will need to take the lead and have the main responsibility for managing the application and any grant).
In order to be eligible for a grant, you must:
Be a South African citizen living in South Africa
Be established in South Africa
Be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the project, not acting as an intermediary
3. What kind of projects may be financed?
The types of projects that may be financed are:
Tours and concerts: performances; country and regional tours; participation at festivals and showcases, etc. (where you are able to demonstrate that such performances will develop your professional or creative practice)
Collaborative projects: artistic collaborations between musicians
Professional development projects/visits: for South African music industry professionals to build networks, and knowledge. Projects of this nature must directly lead to the development of live music
Local partners: You will need to conduct your own research and have identified and communicated with a potential partner or host based in the country you wish to work in. The partner may be an individual or organisation and must be an established musician or music professional.
Your project must take place in one or more of the following countries only: United Kingdom, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Seychelles.
The following types of project are NOT ELIGIBLE:
Academic research projects
Scholarships and fellowships for studies or training courses
Fund-raising events, such as charity galas
Projects supporting political parties or religious faith
Recording of albums
Music education projects
The duration of your project may not be less than four days, nor exceed 6 months. Projects must be completed by end of February 2014.
You may submit multiple applications under this call, but may only be awarded one grant.
4.What kind of costs may be financed?
Items that the fund will cover are: travel and transportation; daily needs (per diems); material costs (hiring of backline and other music & sound equipment); accommodation; visa.
Items that the fund will not cover are: hiring of venues and other spaces; buying assets, such as equipment, computers, software and instruments; general running costs and overheads that are paid for by other income, including own funds of the applicant; costs that are already covered by other funding; ongoing overheads related to equipment or buildings, such as insurance and maintenance costs.
5.How do you apply?
You must complete the Application Form in English and submit it, including the mandatory attachments, to the address indicated below. The mandatory attachments of every application are:
Legal documentation of the applicant: ID/Passport copy for individuals and organisation representatives; deed of incorporation for organisation.
Letter from your international host confirming their support for your visit.
Evidence that you are a musician or music professional (such as press coverage, website links, evidence of prizes, public appearances or residencies, CV, etc.).
Budget (income and expenditure of the project – you must include income from other sponsors, funders or contributing partners).
*Incomplete applications will not be assessed.
Application deadlines:
The opening date for applications in this round is 10 June 2013. The deadline for the submission of applications is 31 July 2013.
