A lorry carrying pallets of plastic has hit the low railway bridge on Green Lane in Eccles.

The impact of the crash caused the truck’s roof to be ripped from its bindings, smashing into the road below.

Four police cars were called to the scene at 9.35am this morning, Wednesday 7 October.

Debris has been scattered across both sides of the road.

Green Lane has been closed at the junction of Cromwell Road for Liverpool Road with police traffic diversions in place.

At the time of the accident the lorry was travelling towards Monton.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “The lorry driver was out safely at the scene at there are no injuries.”

The accident has caused a number of rail delays through Patricroft train station.

The last time a vehicle hit the 4.1m (13ft 6in) bridge was in May 2015 when an Arriva bus smashed all of its top deck windows.

Luckily the bus was out of service and had only the driver on board at the time.
