This week is a major week in the Smith household: swimming, hockey, skating, gymnastics, meet the creature (teacher) night, school picture day, etc.  Oh and then there’s my job – it’s extremely busy at this time of the year too.

Oh but wait – I was invited to attend two blogging conferences – neither of which require me to fly anywhere!  One of them is completely free with a complimentary two night stay at a fancy dancy hotel, and the other is a 20 min drive from my house, therefore no hotel needed!  I even have more than enough vacation time to attend a week of blogging conferences…..

Priorities

As I looked at our family’s busy schedule I realised that going to either one of these fun conferences would greatly inconvenience my family.  The girls would be disappointed that I didn’t meet their teachers, and they’d have to be dropped off at before-school care at 7:15 am, 4 days in a row.  Add to that, hubby would have to find proper picture day outfits while juggling swimming lessons, skating lessons, meet the teacher night and homework.  Not to mention the stress of making sure he got to work on time every day, and made it back to our town in time to get the kids.

So I turned down both of the conferences.

I’ve learned that in 5 years from now it won’t matter who I met, or what I learned at the conferences. But you can bet my family will remember the week that mommy was away during what is probably the busiest week of our school year, especially if my kids end up wearing horrible outfits for their picture day that hubby let them pick out.

Yanno, something like this:

This is me in grade 6 (baby!), in 1986

I would feel HORRIBLE if my kids pictures ending up on Awkward School Pictures all because I went to a blogging conference!  So for the sake of my daughters, I’m staying home. (Shit – I’m getting old.)

Have you ever missed any “fun” grown up events due to family priorities?

Do you have any awkward school photos of yourself?
