THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY MEETING FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN SAINTS SWIMMING AND DIVING on Thursday at lunch in room 223.

ALL JUNIOR SOPHOMORE AND FRESHMAN PLANNING ON TRYING OUT FOR BASEBALL this spring there is a mandatory meeting in the library at lunch. Please be prompt. The meeting will begin 5 minutes after the first lunch bell.

ATTENTION SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Applications are now available for this year’s Alternative Spring Break trip – our destination will be Washington DC. Stop by Campus Ministry for more information on the trip and how to apply.

THE JAZZ AND SYMPHONIC BANDS ARE LOOKING FOR CURRENT FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN PLAYING DRUM SET WITH US. You do NOT need to currently read music, nor do you need to own your own drums. You will receive course credit that meets your Visual and Performing Arts graduation requirement, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to Reno, Nevada with the 32nd Street Jazz Band this spring. If you are interested or have questions, please see Mr. Jagow in Vasey Hall Room 108 (aka the Band Room).

FROM THE AUCTION COMMITTEE: We are hosting another Donut Drop-off this Friday, February 14th to gather items for Saints Auction coming up in April.

For every donation dropped off this Friday morning you will receive a donut. So tell your parent and just consider it your Valentine’s Day gift to Saints. We will be taking the donations in front of the big gate on Nutmeg St.

ATTENTION TO THOSE STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED and would like to be trained to be Eucharistic Ministers at our weekly Masses. There will be a training session TOMORROW Thursday at lunchtime in the chapel. Please be on time. Thank you.

THE CHINESE CLUB WILL MEET TODAY AT LUNCH IN ROOM 319. All who have any interest in Chinese culture and language are invited to attend. You won’t be disappointed!

SPRING SPORTS BEGIN ON THE 22ND OF THIS MONTH. If you do not have all your paperwork completed and turned in you will not be allowed to participate. Don’t miss out; get your things turned in now. Check with your coach if you have any questions.

ATTENTION FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES, AND JUNIORS: Are you thinking about registering for Mr. Linville’s European Travel class for Intersession next year? Wouldn’t it be great to travel around Europe during Intersession? Mr. Linville is having an information meeting for parents on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6:00 pm. If you would like your parents to attend this meeting to get more information on the cost and locations, please stop by Mr. Linville’s classroom and pick up a flyer.

Please remember that you must have your course selection forms completely filled out and signed by your parents or guardians in order to select your courses.

THE SAINTS AFRICAN AMERICAN ALLIANCE PRESENTS THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH “PERSON OF THE DAY”

Dr. Maya Angelou, born on April 4th, 1928, in St. Louis, Missouri, is one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. Hailed as a global renaissance woman, Dr. Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist.

Dr. Angelou has served on two presidential committees, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and has received 3 Grammy Awards.

Dr. Angelou’s words and actions continue to stir our souls, energize our bodies, liberate our minds, and heal our hearts.

Doris Miller, known as “Dorie” to shipmates and friends, was born in Waco, Texas, on 12 October 1919, to Henrietta and Conery Miller. He had three brothers, one of which served in the Army during World War II. While attending Moore High School in Waco, he was a fullback on the football team. He worked on his father’s farm before enlisting in the U.S Navy as Mess Attendant, Third Class, at Dallas, Texas, on 16 September 1939, to travel, and earn money for his family. He later was commended by the Secretary of the Navy, and advanced in rank soon after.

At 5:10 a.m. on 24 November, while cruising near Butaritari Island, a single torpedo from Japanese submarine I-175 struck the escort carrier near the stern. The aircraft bomb magazine detonated a few moments later, sinking the warship within minutes. Listed as missing following the loss of that escort carrier, Miller was officially presumed dead 25 November 1944, a year and a day after the loss of Liscome Bay.

Richard Wright was an American author most famous or his works on racial themes. Wright is best known for his book entitled Black Boy which became a best seller in 1945

William Edwars Burghardt Du Bois, also known as W.E.B Du Bois, was born on February 23, 1868. He was an African American sociologist, historian, civil-right activist, author, and editor. He was the first African American to ever graduate from Harvard and later became a professor at Atlanta University.

Bessie Coleman was an American Pilate and the first female aviator of African American descent. She was also the first African American to hold an international pilot license. She could not gain admission to American flight schools because she was black and a woman. No black U.S. aviator would train her either. She was forced to learn to fly abroad. Coleman died at the age of 34 from a tragic plane accident. Several facilities have been built in her honor including a road at Chicago’s O’Hare airport.
