Who is Skye T. Steen and what do you do?
I am student in graphic design currently finishing off with my diploma at the Durban University of Technology. Although I have studied graphic design as a whole, having the ability to work in various fields, I have grown to favour illustration, often integrating it into my work. Apart from working on university assignments, I keep myself busy with freelance jobs, exhibitions and competitions to help me grow as a designer.
How would you define your style or art?
I like working in a combination of detailed and simple imagery and/or elements, which often creates a playful style in a sense which I really enjoy. The visuals in my illustration works are often unrealistic in many aspects, as I find it to be more exciting and interesting – a way to detract from the norms of reality.
What inspires your work?
Everyday images and happenings are a great inspiration to my work, whether it be a social night out, a walk down the road or the view from my window. There is most likely a story behind each and every one of my works. Recently I started looking at social issues and animal cruelty, which I have taken great interest to and looking forward to what I produce in my spare time. Regarding technique, I have many inspirations as you can never stop learning and growing when it comes to design. From historic artists such as painter, Alphonse Mucha, and pattern designer, William Morris, to old-school tattoo art, modern illustrators and digital work, I am constantly inspired.
What are you currently working on?
At the moment I am working on designs for Durban’s “Threads” exhibition by “TheOnlyPeople” which will take place on the 16th of October. I have already completed a t-shirt design, which is up on my Behance portfolio, and now I am busy illustrating onto a pair of shoes, which will follow the same concept, and preparing a design for the “Flexfit” live cap art competition on the evening. Of course, there’s also my final year exhibition at my University which I have to work towards, so I’m just preparing my work for that and designing the event posters.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?
Don’t stop drawing! I find it is just as important as the computer. You’d be surprised as to what more you can achieve with this skill.

Who is better, Michael Jackson or Prince? (who do you prefer if you had to choose?)
Well, I don’t listen to either of their music, so I’d have to say Michael Jackson, just because he danced with Zombies.
