Today we have a great chat with Illustrator and general creative artist Anthony Petrie

Who is Anthony Petrie and what do you do?

Anthony Petrie is an American product designer, poster artist, graphic designer, illustrator, and general maker of things & stuff working in the product industry. His portfolio includes work across a broad range of mediums. He likes creating good design for good people, and has an unhealthy obsession with zombies. His headquarters are located in the glorious state of Rhode Island. Some of his clients include: Marvel, CBS, Paramount, AMC, Bad Robot, SyFy, Reebok, and Nickelodeon. He regularly displays work in Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

How would you define your style or art?

Conceptual and expressive homages to pop culture, inspired by comic book aesthetics and story-telling. Comic art is something I pull from most stylistically. Contrasting thick & thin black outlines and vibrant colors are just appealing to me. Contextually, I love artwork as a conveyor of story. Like a lot of people my age, comics are something that were so engrained in my childhood, that my passion for that medium continued throughout my life. I try to approach each poster as one panel of a comic, in order to emulate that visual story-telling style.

What inspires your work?

Most of my poster art is inspired by pop culture, film or television. Design-wise, I love clever products, architecture, and furniture design. For personal work, I’m completely fascinated with all things Japanese, from feudal-era samurai to Gundam toys. Overall I think travel is the best way for me to get inspired. Any time I’m able to get out of my little bubble is an opportunity to find inspiration. My work outside of poster illustration is spread across a broad range of mediums, so it’s important to have an all-encompassing view on design. I think it makes you a more complete artist.

What are you currently working on?

I have a show coming up next month at Narrows Gallery in Fall River MA with a bunch of other great artists. I’ll have 5 new posters as well as a bunch of old favorites on display. I also have a few shows for Gallery 1988 on the horizon, as well as some gig posters.
What advice would you give young creatives looking to do what you do?

Get your work out there. You’ll do 100 posters for free before you’ll ever get paid for one, so create as much art as you can. Learn from other artists but carve your own niche. Strive to get better with each new piece of art. Diversify…the best artists are the most well-rounded. See the big picture but be able to focus on the details. Always move forward. And, most importantly, have fun and be passionate. If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.
