The station, which left local radio 23 years ago, will be relaunched by a group of its former DJs. It’ll be a low-power community station and will broadcast on 93.3 FM and be streamed online, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The idea is to create “a new station in the spirit of the old KZAP that plays old and new music and mixes it all together,” Dennis Newhall, a former KZAP disc jockey and one of the organizers of the new venture, said Thursday.

“That’s an animal that doesn’t exist in Sacramento,” Newhall said.

The station will come back to local radio July 4th and will be able to reach 1.2 million people in the greater Sacramento area.

The original KZAP made its debut in 1968 and was known by its call letters and its logo, which featured a cartoon image of an orange cat. The new KZAP has obtained the rights to the famous logo.

The new station’s music will be curated by DJs, including the former KZAP regulars who have started this venture.
