Teen Reading Week begins March 5

PITTSTON — Teen Reading Week will be celebrated from Sunday, March 5 to Saturday, March 11 for teens in grades six through 12. The programs include:

• Teen Online Scavenger Hunt — Pick up an instruction sheet online or in the teen section and once the hunt is completed, email the answers to the library by March 11 for a chance at a prize.

• Book Spine Poetry — Stop by the library and create an original poem using only book titles. Creations will be posed on social media.

• An hour of Coding — King’s College computer science major John Kozak will be on hand at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9 to shoq participants how to use computer coding to play a game or make their own game. Registration is required.

• Film making 101 — As part of Teen Reading Lounge activities, acting director Vinnie Langdon III will teach teens how to write and direct a commercial. Pre-registration with Teen Reading Lounge is required.

The “This is Us” wrap party will be held Thursday, March 9. This is for adults only and registration is required.

The next Furry Tails Reading Program will be held from 10 to 1 :30 a.m. Saturday, March 11.

The Pittston Area National Honor Society will host a Kid Fun Day from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 11. Children will have the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts, games, story time, and a tutoring lesson from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission for this event is one book per child, preferably a children’s book, as they will be donated to the Children’s Wing at Geisinger Hospital in Danville. Starting Saturday, March 11, children ages 18 months to 5 years can stop by the library for storytime with books, songs, nursery rhymes and a craft at 11 a.m. every Saturday morning. Call the library to register.

Teen Reading Lounge will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 11.

Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, March 13 to discuss “Rainwater” by Sandra Brown. Copies are limited, but available at the front desk.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) activities for children in kindergarten to fifth grade will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 16.

A Spring Pop-Up Children’s Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. Items on sale include toys, clothing and more. Any interested vendors can call the library.

A Ukranian pysanky class will be taught by Tammy Budnovitch from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 27. This class is for adults and teaches the basic steps of making a pysanky. Cost is $25 per person which includes supplies needed. Reserve a spot by calling the library as this is a first-come-first serve basis.

Teen Advisory Group will host a screening and discussion of the documentary film “Miss Representation” at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 30. This event and free and refreshments will be provided. Call the library to register.

The Winter Read-O Program for children ages infant to fifth grade continues through the end of March. Participants can stop in the library to pick up a sheet and complete requirements for a special prize.

The current session for Grown-Up and Me concludes Monday, April 10. Children ages 18 months to five can bring their adult to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. every Monday.

Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen Boettger concludes Tuesday, April 11. Programs are: Books and Babies — ages newborn to 18 months, 9:30 a.m.; Terrific Twos — ages 18 months to three, 10:30 a.m.; Preschool Pals — ages three to five, 11:30 a.m. Registration is required.

A blood drive will be held at the library Thursday, April 13. Registration will be available online at the Red Cross page or by calling the library.

Roaming Readers Book Club meets at 11 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants get the opportunity to walk, talk and listen to an audio book. Each walk lasts 30 minutes. Call the library to register.

Fiber Art Afternoon is held from 1:30 to 3:3o p.m. every Thursday. Participants will bring their own supplies and work on crochet, knitting and felting.

The Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome. For more information call 570-654-9565.

Lego Club meets Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Library provides the Legos, but adult supervision is required and participants are required to help clean up.

Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.

Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.

The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.

Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.

Create Shakespeare insults throughout March

WEST PITTSTON —A Shakespeare Insult Generator will be available all month during March in the Young Adult section for teens to mix and match more than 150,000 insults in the bard’s own words.

Minecraft In Real Life is returning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 7. There will be creeper toss and nerf gun targets, videos, 3D mushroom craft, pixel art, a hunt for elements and bingo. Registration is required.

Celebrate the release of the “Goosebumps” series at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 21. Participants will listen to excerpts around the campfire, play Witch’s Brew, formulate monster blood, design their own book cover and learn about the author R.L. Stine. Registration is required.

Join Danielle Dominick from CareerLink from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 as she leads an information session about the services CareerLink provides in terms of employment assistance, available workshop and numerous resources.

West Pittston residents and essential oil enthusiasts Kory Lyn Angeli and Marissa Linder will be at the library at 6:30 p.m. Monday, March 27 to explain the benefits of homemade cleaning products, offer samples to try and hand out recipes for participants to make themselves. Registration is required by calling the library.

Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Captain Underpants at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 along with a new book series “Dog Man.” Participants will don red caps, come up with their own superhero name, play with toilet paper and decorate some underwear. Registration is required.

Learn about the vegan lifestyle with a special seminar at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4. Registration is required.

Master Gardener Barbara Soyka will be at the library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5 to teach participants how to plan, prep, plant and prune their own vegetable garden this spring. Registration is required.

Bad Art Night will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 as participants are encouraged to make their worst piece of art to display in a Bad Art Exhibition at the end of the program. The creator of the “Worse Piece of Art” will win a prize. Registration is required.

Join Anne Bramblett and Maria Jiunta-Heck at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 on how to gather ideas for a home makeover without spending too much money. Registration is required.

Elephant and Piggy Day will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 21 that will include stories, games and crafts for pre-kindergarten students. Registration is required. A Pigeon Day will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, May 26.

Metallic Origami Book Making will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 23. Using sponges, stamps and bubble wrap, participants will turn plain brown paper into metallic works of art. Registration is required.

Author Paul Cwalina will be available at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 24 to help participants explore the reasons to become a self-published author. He will explain the advantages, and disadvantages of doing so and well as where to self-publish and give tips on how to market books. Registration is required.

Students from the Misericordia University Speech-Language Pathology Department will be available at 1 p.m. Friday,. April 28 to conduct a story time as well as educate parents and caregivers on language development and literacy.

A LuLaRoe Clothing Fundraisier will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 29.

American Girl Party will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29. Participants and their dolls will celebrate highlighting the new Girl of the Year 2017: Gabriela by enjoying excerpts from her latest “American Girl” book and participate in theme-related crafts and activities. Registration is required and is limited to the first 18 girls. Children must be 8 years of age or older.

A beginner computer class, designed specifically for seniors, offers insight into the basics of a computer. Participants will learn the different parts of the computer, be able to turn off the computer correctly, manage icons, open and save files, personalize their computer by changing the background or screen saver, browse the internet and use email. This program will be held every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. from May 3 to May 24. Registration is required and space is limited.

Learn to make cost effective and ecofriendy beauty products at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9. Registration is required.

Join Anne Bramblett and Maria Jiunta-Heck at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 15 as they go over inexpensive decorating and renovation ideas to spruce up older homes. Participants will learn about how to use silver leaf, create an accent wall with stencils instead of wallpaper and re-imagine painted surfaces with wax-relief and weathering techniques. Registration is required.

Children will be introduced to Scratch, an online programming environment to help them learn code at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 16. They will be introduced to ReCon 6.0 Programmable Rover and create binary necklaces of their initials. Also, the Ozobots are back from the popular STEM program. Registration is required.

Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.

WYOMING FREE LIBRARY

LEGO Club meets March 11

WYOMING — LEGO Club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon on the following Saturdays: March 11, April 8. This program is free and for children of all ages. Registration is required by calling the library.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 13, a representative from the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank will be at the library to register Luzerne County residents 60 years of age and older in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) made available by the United States Department of Agriculture. The CSFP provides one box of non-perishable food a month to qualified individuals. This program does not affect SNAP benefits or any other assistance program. The gross income of applicants with a household size of one cannot exceed $1,287 a month or $15,444/year. Applicants with a household size of two cannot exceed $1,736 a month or $20,826/year. Applicants must bring proof of household income and a current ID with age and current address.

The library is remote hosting a special 90th anniversary Art ‘N’ Vino event on Monday, March 24 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Art n’ Vino Paint and Sip Studio, 667 N. River St., Wilkes-Barre. The cost is $36 per person. To register, call the studio at 570-430-5045.

Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.

The Literary Snoops Book Club meets at noon the second Wednesday of east month. Participants are encouraged to bring a bag lunch for the discussion.
