Fall hours in place
PITTSTON — The Pittston Memorial Library now has the following fall hours in place:
Monday and Thursday – Noon to 7 p.m.
Wednesday – Closed
Tuesday and Friday – 9 to 4 p.m.
Saturday – 9 to 4 p.m.
The next Adult Coloring Club will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3.
A craft club for adults called “Crafter Work” will hold a class at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 in which crafters will paint a rustic stacked pumpkin. This class is $25 and all supplies are included. Call the library at 570-654-9565 to register.
A new club called Hands On Club will meet monthly for a crafting project beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. This club is open to kids from kindergarten up to fifth grade.
Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is hosting a Shortest Scary Story Ever night at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 in which members will bring in their own stories to read.
The library is starting a new tween book club for readers in fourth and fifth grade called “Page Turners.” Meetings will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Oct. 13 and include a craft and discussion of Roald Dahl’s “The Witches.”
Tickets are now on sale for a 1920s gangster murder mystery dinner theater fundraiser taking place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. The theme is “Crime and Pun-ishment” and will include a family-style Italian dinner catered by JustFred. Tickets are non-refundable and can only be purchased over the phone or at the Pittston library. They are $55 for one ticket, or two for $100 (a $2 surcharge will be added for all credit card purchases). This is a 21 and over only event. For more information, call the library.
The monthly book discussion will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10 to discuss “The Silent Wife” by A.S.A. Harrison. Copies are limited, but available, at the front desk.
Get into the spirit of Halloween with a psychic or tarot reading from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 22 with psychic medium Jim Byers and tarot card reader Jonathan Coyle. Readings are priced at $25 each with a portion of the sale going to the library. Appointments will be secured with a pre-payment to be made at the library. For more information, call the library.
Children ages 18 months to 5 can bring their grownup to the library for a fun story, craft and free play from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Monday evenings. Registration is required. This session concludes Monday, Oct. 24.
Tales on Tuesday with Miss Kristen will run until Tuesday Oct. 25. The program features age appropriate stories, songs, activities, and free play for infants, toddlers and pre-school age children. The program is as follows:
• Books and Babies – for ages newborn to 18 months, 9:30 a.m.
• Terrific Twos – for ages 18 months to 3 years, 10:30 a.m.
• Preschool Pals – ages 3 to 5 years, 11:30 a.m.
Registration is required and sign-ups are available in the children’s wing or by calling the children’s department.
Local author John Stanley will discuss his book “Suscon Screams Louder,” a follow-up to “Suscon Screams” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the John P. Cosgrove Center. Books will be available for sale plus refreshments. Register at the front desk or call the library to reserve a spot.
Scary Story Hour for Adults will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 in the John P. Cosgrove Center.
Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library meet at 6:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of every month. New members are always welcome.
Volunteer opportunities are available at the library. Opportunities include helping in the library, or with the Friends of the Pittston Memorial Library group. If interested, fill out a volunteer form at the front desk.
Adult Coloring Club meets at 1 p.m. every Friday and on scheduled evenings.
Adult computer classes will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. every Thursday. The class goes over email, mouse skills and web surfing. Registration is required by calling the library.
The Crochet Club meets from 10 to 11:45 a.m. every Tuesday. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies including a hook sized I, J, or K yarn.
The Wee Build program is held Thursdays at 6 p.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. for children ages 1 through 11. The new toys used promote development in many skills and allow children to express themselves through play. Stop by the library and start building.
Board games for all ages are available at the front desk and can be used anytime.
Children ages 3 to 11 are invited to the Lego Club from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. every Wednesday at the Pittston Memorial Library.
The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the library is free and open to all children in the community from birth to kindergarten. The child will receive a bag with an age-appropriate book to keep in his or her collection.
WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY
Learn about nature’s vampires Oct. 4
WEST PITTSTON — A Nature’s Vampires event will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the West Pittston Library. This interactive event, inspired by the exhibit “The Blood is the Life: Vampires in Art & Nature,” will focus on vampire creatures that have long been present in nature, especially small mammals and insects that get their food by sucking the blood of other animals.
Join local pizza-maker and business owner Lindo Sabatini at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 as he discusses the alternatives to traditional pizza crusts. From gluten-free to wheat, there is an option for everyone.
The Library Laboratory is back at 6 p.m. Tuesdays to continue engaging kids ages 9 and up in science-based, hands-on learning activities. Measure, mix, compare, experiment and test in a fun environment. The following is a list of upcoming sessions:
• Session 2: Oct. 11, Gore and More — Get creepy just in time for Halloween with slime, fake blood and a severed finger.
• Session 3: Nov. 8, Motion — Help welcome guest instructor Mrs. Campenni from Montgomery Avenue Elementary. She’ll have participants building, racing, dropping, sliding, pushing, bouncing and more as they conduct experiments to support Newton’s Laws of Motion.
West Pittston resident and New York Life Agent Adam Ruderman will discuss how to best teach children smart financial habits at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13. Learn how to help kids make good financial decisions at any age.
Get outside at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 and have fun with some games such as Red Rover, Tag, Leapfrog, Sharks and Minnows, Duck-Duck-Goose, Kickball, Dodgeball, Four Square and more. Bring a drink, and this event is weather permitting.
The literacy, advocacy and fundraising group, The Bibliochicks, are hosting a gently-used purse and jewelry sale from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 16.
Get into the spooky spirit and be entertained by a selection of frightening flicks on the following dates:
• Tuesday, Oct. 18 – “10 Cloverfield Lane”
• Thursday, Oct. 20 – “The Ring”
• Tuesday, Oct. 25 – “Ouija”
• Thursday, Oct. 27 – “The Grudge”
Show time is 5:45 p.m. for each movie. Light snacks will be provided, but participants must bring their own beverages. Movies are all rated PG-13.
A Halloween Celebrations will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28. There will be scary books around the “campfire” and a kid-friendly story of terror film. There will also be making a creepy-crawly craft. Participants can bring their already carved jack-o-lantern to compete for best in show.
Hands-On STEM will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1. Participants can explore a variety of interactive activities at their own pace. Science: magnets, static, tornadoes; Technology: play with tiny robots and educational apps on iPads; Engineering: build with straws or wooden planks, construct a marble run; Math: estimation jars, tanagrams and sorting.
Minecraft In Real Life will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. There will be creeper toss and nerf gun targets, videos, 3D mushroom craft, pixel art, a hunt for elements and bingo.
Join Christie (Yarosavich) Bonnice of Christie Bonnice State Farm for a seminar on Social Security Benefits at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17. She will explain several key topics, cover some of the most frequently asked questions and review different strategies that are available.
Teen Advisory Board (TAB) will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday until Nov. 29. Members will get to express their interests, ideas for programs and recommendations for library purchases. Snacks will be provided.
Thumbprint self portraits will be done at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. After talking about the different types of fingerprint patterns, participants will create an art project with an enlargement of their own thumbprint that is unique to them.
Alice Judge Costello Birthday Party will be from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. There will be treats, hot beverages, and a special display of holiday books and decorations in honor of Alice Judge Costello’s birthday.
Kindergarten Readiness Program is held at 1 p.m. every Friday. This early-literacy enhanced program is designed to introduce children to the library, get them interested in books and develop the skills needed for school. Parents can spend some fun one-on-one time with their child, or grandchild, as we read books together, sing songs, play games and make crafts centered around the weekly, kid-friendly theme. Learn pre-reading techniques that can be done at home to enhance their skills. Register by Wednesday of each week.
WYOMING FREE LIBRARY
‘Star Wars’ event is Oct. 9
WYOMING — A special “Star Wars” event, sponsored by the Wyoming Free Library, will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9 at the John Jude Bolin Memorial Park on the corner of Eighth and Butler streets. The event will consist of “Star Wars”-themed activity stations, a parade from the library to the park, refreshments, a scavenger hunt, and door prizes. An invitation to the event can be picked up at the library and redeemed at the event for a chance to win door prizes.
The library is selling Boscov’s Friends Helping Boscov’s Friends shopping passes. The passes worth $5 each and offer a 25 percent discount Tuesday, Oct. 18. Passes can be purchased at the front desk and all proceeds benefit the library.
The Wyoming Free Library will hold a discussion group during the second season of “Podlark” which will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. every Monday through Nov. 28.
Reading help will be available at the library for children in grades 1-4 from 1 to 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Call the library to register.
