The University of Scranton’s Schemel Forums presents: ‘Art along the Silk Roads,’ 5:30 to 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at The University of Scranton in the Pearn Auditorium of Brennan Hall. Nancy Steinhardt, Ph.D., professor of East Asian art, chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, and curator of Chinese art at the Penn Museum at the University of Pennsylvania, will talk about the major sites and monuments of the Silk Roads, the cultural highways that linked East and West Asia by way of oases and some of the most hazardous terrain on earth for more than 1500 years dating back to the first century BC. Chinese classical music performance and lecture, Sept. 30 at The University of Scranton. Cost: free. The university will host a lecture by Paul R. Goldin, Ph.D., a professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, at 3:30 p.m., and a concert by the Xinxin Nanguan Ensemble from Taiwan at 7 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center. Notable Writers of Northeastern PA, 7 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Dietrich Theater. NEPA is notable historically for a number of writers from the area who attracted national attention. For example, Pottsville native John O’Hara became one of the 20th century’s most popular novelists, while Wilkes-Barre-bred Herman Mankiewicz co-authored the script for “Citizen Kane,” one of Hollywood’s greatest films.
