A slight chance of snow is possible in the Wyoming Valley as the week comes to an end, and wintry mix is possible into the weekend.

Winds, however, could also produce frigid wind chills.

According to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service, winds could gust as high as 40 mph or more this afternoon and into this evening as arctic air pours into the region.

Those gusty winds could produce wind chills as low as 10 below zero.

The forecast

The National Weather Service indicated it was 18 degrees as of 6:54 a.m. at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, and overcast skies were reported.

Mostly cloudy skies are expected today, and there will be a 40 percent chance of snow showers between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Less than half an inch of snow is expected, and winds could also gust as high as 30 mph. Today’s high will be near 18.

Cloudy skies will carry over into tonight, along with a 30 percent chance of snow showers between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. Winds could also gust as high as 26 miles per hour. The low will be around 10, but the wind child could drop as low as -1.

Partly sunny skies will round out the week Friday, with a high near 21.

Snow is likely after 2 a.m. Friday night, and around an inch of snowfall is expected. The low will be around 18.

Snow will continue to be likely before 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by sleet between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and drizzle after 2 p.m. The high will be near 39.

Drizzle is likely before 8 p.m. Saturday night, followed by rain into the overnight hours. The low will be around 39.

Rain see the weekend off before 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by a chance of snow showers. The high will be near 44.

Mostly cloudy skies will follow into Sunday night, along with a 50 percent chance of snow showers before p.m. The low will be around 13.
