• 9 a.m., Chatham Nursing & Rehabilitation will host the Duncan Dash, a family and pet-friendly fun fun/walk to raise awareness for the Alzheimer’s dementia population at Elkin Municipal Park, Elkin. Registration starts at 9 a.m. with a balloon send-off ceremony at 9:45 a.m. at the starting line. The walk begins at 10 a.m. There will be several items raffled off, a hot dog cookout for donations, a bouncy house, face painting and more. Registration is free, T-shirts are $10. The Alzheimer’s Association will receive at least 75 percent of the proceeds collected.

• 1 p.m., a special Memorial Day ceremony will be held on the courthouse lawn in Sparta, consisting of speakers from the VFW including State VFW Senior Vice Commander Doug Blevins, the American Legion, the Marine Corps League, and Mayor John Miller. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths by the VFW and the Marine Corps League and featuring the honor guard of the VFW presenting a 21-gun salute and playing of “Taps.” At the conclusion of the ceremony, all military personnel will assemble at the north end of town for the Memorial Day Parade. The program also will feature a presentation of colors and laying of the wreath by members of the Elkin High School Junior Army ROTC Unit.
