• Surry County Farm Bureau is collecting canned foods and other nonperishable items for the the local chapter’s food pantry. Surry County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers and Ranchers program is helping feed Americans who face hunger every day. Items can be donated at the local Farm Bureau office, 112 N. White St., Dobson.

• 8 a.m., the Historic Downtown Wilkesboro Merchant Association is hosting a town-wide sidewalk/yard sale. The event is rain or shine. Downtown business, merchants and nonprofit organizations will have their yard sale items set up in front of their locations on Main Street and the side streets of Wilkesboro. The Humane Society also will be having a yard sale at its location on Cub Creek Park in Wilkesboro.

• 10 a.m., the Blue Ridge Birders will host their fall meeting at Alleghany Public Library, 122 N. Main St., Sparta. It is for anyone interested in birding and wildlife. The program will be long-time Blue Ridge Birder John MacConnell of Ashey County presenting “A Cursory Look at the Landscape and Wildlife of Southern Africa.” MacConnell, a retired research chemist, has experienced birding trips to Costa Rica, Trinidad, Malaysia, China and Africa.

• 10 a.m., Benton Hall Center for the Arts will hold a benefit auction at Rotary Park in North Wilkesboro. The goal is to raise money for the restoration and maintenance of the old North Wilkesboro Elementary School building. • 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, Pinnacle, will host its 24th annual Cornshucking Frolic with live music, heritage demonstrations, hands-on activities, food available throughout the day for a nominal fee includes chicken stew, BBQ, ham biscuits, pintos and cornbread, fried pies, beverages, ice cream. There will be heirloom apples and apple trees for sale. Cost to enter the frolic is $6 per adult; $4 for children 6 to 12; and free for children 5 and younger. No pets are allowed.

The celebration will end at 1 p.m. with a closing ceremony at Elkin Elementary School as a special plaque honoring those who helped build Elkin Graded School will be placed on the Bell Tower. • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Starmount High School will benefit from a Flow Buick of Winston-Salem one-day test-drive event. For each person who test drives a Buick at the school, with no purchase necessary, the school will earn $10. If there are more than 100 test drives, Buick will donate $20 per valid test drive. Participants must be 21 or older, possess a valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

• 1 to 5 p.m., the 36th annual Sonker Festival will be held at the Edwards-Franklin House, 4132 Haystack Road, Mount Airy, featuring old-time and bluegrass music, quilters, Civil War exhibit, flat foot dancing, sonkers and beverages.
