RONDA — Thursday’s work session of the Ronda City Council was full of excitement and appreciation.

Commissioner Rheajean Benge acknowledged the hard work of accountant Michael Boaz for his work converting the town’s accounting systems over the summer. Although Boaz had not requested payment for several months of work, the board agreed the town should pay his standard $1,000 per month fee for his time.

Of concern as well was organization of the local festival called the Round About. Although expected to occur in September of next year, consultant Ron Niland suggested forming a committee to meet at 5 p.m. before the regular council meeting on Nov. 8 to begin planning. Individuals who already have been approached about joining this committee will be contacted as well as an invitation extended to those not living in town with the expectation that others will be added to the committee.

Niland also expressed anticipation for the Overmountain Victory Trail work that was expected. Niland and brother Gary will look at a map to decide which properties along the river should be investigated for potential locations for the trail. Land will need to be acquired or right of way easements arranged.

Council member Sandra Simmons noted that some of the land was owned by the railroad which might cause some difficulties. Niland also intends to look at possible grants for trail construction on the federally designated trail. Niland communicated his excitement about the history of the trail and the area’s impact on the King’s Mountain Battle of the Revolutionary War.

Mayor Victor Varela brought to the attention of the board that Carolina Fibers had an outstanding sewer bill. Although it falls under the jurisdiction of the Yadkin Valley Sewer Authority, it is up to the town of Ronda to collect the funds as well as fulfilling any shut-offs for non-payment.

Carolina Fibers maintains that 90 percent of the water it uses goes into the process not the sewers, therefore it should not have to pay what it has been billed. Benge asked, “Why have they not been shut off?” since they have not even paid the base rate since July. Varela stated he would talk to the manger and owner and tell them to talk to the sewer authority.

The next town council meeting will be held Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. at the town hall.
