Patrol: Trooper kills man who pointed gun

KINSTON (AP) — Authorities say a state trooper shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at him in Kinston.

A Department of Public Safety news release says the trooper came to assist deputies early Sunday after reports of a shooting at a nightclub.

The release says the trooper got to the scene, left his vehicle and saw two men running toward him. Authorities say the trooper saw one had a gun and told him to stop running and drop it.

The Department of Public Safety says the man failed to comply and pointed the weapon at the trooper, who then shot and killed the man. The second person was taken into custody without incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting. The 6-year veteran was put on administrative duty.

Cops say man purposely flew drone near chopper

CHARLOTTE (AP) — A Concord man has been arrested after police say he purposely flew a drone near a police helicopter.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a helicopter pilot had to abruptly alter his flight path at about 12:40 a.m. Thursday to avoid a midair collision with a drone.

Police arrested 26-year-old Christopher Baucom on charges including interference with manned aircraft by unmanned aircraft system. He was freed on bail, and it wasn’t known if he had an attorney.

The Federal Aviation Administration prohibits drones from being flown at night.

The helicopter pilot was helping search for a wanted suspect. Baucom told police he was using the drone to take video footage of the police helicopter as it worked the call.
