East Surry’s team consisted of Jacob Hart, Daphne Dotson, Adrian Caro, Katie Dezarn, and Luke Joyce, with Dr. Amy Jessup as the coach.

From Surry Early College, Courtland Hardy and Dannis Cazarez placed first in the bottle rocket launch and will go on to compete in the state Science Olympiad competition in April.

Tori Vandall and Caitlinn McBride placed fourth in the rocks and minerals.

Science Olympiad is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics degrees and careers in North Carolina according to Amy Harpe, public information officer for East Surry High School.

Every year tournaments are held on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state.

These tournaments are academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of different hands-on, interactive, challenging and inquiry-based events that are well balanced between the various disciplines of biology, earth science, environmental science, chemistry, physics, engineering and technology, said Harpe.
