Health Department Inspections is a regular listing of inspections conducted in Surry County establishments by North Carolina health officials. The listing includes restaurants, schools, day care facilities, adult care and other facilities. The listings give the health inspector score, if applicable, along with the text of their findings in their words.
Miss Angels Heavenly Pies, 155 N. Main St., Mount Airy. Inspected July 6, score 96. Violations: 1) Insects and rodents not present; no unauthorized animals: Controlling Pests – PF — Flies are numerous. Be careful about leaving the doors open and contact your pest control operator, if necessary. Outer Openings, Protected – C — The front door was open at the time of inspection, possibly leading to the infestation in flies.
2) Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage and display: Food Storage-Preventing Contamination from the Premises – C — Keep all cooked pies covered in some way to prevent contamination from flies, etc. Also, there was a cake layer sitting directly on the shelf in the back 3-door cooler. Never store food directly on a unit shelf as they are not cleaned and sanitized. All opened packages of dry foods must be stored in approved containers with tight-fitting lids (numerous dry foods).
3) Single-use and single-service articles; properly stored and used: Equipment, Utensils, Linens and Single-Service and Single-Use Articles-Storing – C — (REPEAT): Keep all single-service items off of the floor (back room and up front)—food storage containers, cups, lids for cups, forks. Keep single-service items inverted (food contact surface down) to prevent contamination.
4) Non-food-contact surfaces clean: Nonfood Contact Surfaces – C — Clean all nonfood contact surfaces (top of equipment, shelving, inside units (throughout), inside the microwave, etc.
5) Physical facilities installed, maintained and clean: Floors, Walls and Ceilings-Cleanability – C — Keep all storage at least 6 inches off of the floor to facilitate cleaning. Place a strainer in the floor sink/drain under the 3-compartment sink to prevent larger debris from clogging up the drain.Cleaning, Frequency and Restrictions – C — Clean the floor behind where the exposed wood is under the hot holding unit up front. However, there was a lot of improvement on floor/wall cleaning.
Rockford General Store Inc. food stand, 5174 Rockford Rd., Dobson. Inspected July 7, score 98. Violations: 1) Proper cooling methods used; adequate equipment for temperature control: Cooling Methods – PF — A large container of hot fried apples for pie filling was placed in the reach-in cooler. Food must be cooled using a method that will quickly cool the food down and not allow the food surrounding the hot food to increase in temperature. This was corrected by educating the kitchen employee and placing the container of apple filling in a prep sink, placed in an ice bath.
2) Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage and display: Food Storage-Preventing Contamination from the Premises – C — There were several pans of bread that were left out in the back prep area, uncovered. When allowing bread to cool, it would be best to keep the bread on your speed rack, with the top covered (each pan of bread would be covering the one underneath it, in this case. Ideally, placing the speed rack sleeve on it would be best.
3) Wiping cloths: properly used and stored: Wiping Cloths, Air Drying Location – C — Wiping cloths were being stored on the speed rack at the same time bread was being stored there. Do not allow the wiping cloths to air-dry on a rack used for the storage of food. There is a potential for contamination when doing this.
Speedway #6950, 840 W. Pine St., Mount Airy. Inspected July 7, score 96. Violations: 1) PIC present, Demonstration – Certification by accredited program, and performs duties: Certified Food Protection Manager – C – The person in charge is not certified as a food protection manager. A certified food protection manager must be present at all hours when the grill is being operated or food prepared.
2) Food-contact surfaces: cleaned and sanitized: Equipment Food-Contact Surfaces and Utensils-Frequency – C – The ice hopper on the iced coffee machine and the right side soda nozzle on the fountain drink machine had mold build-up on it today. Clean the soda nozzles and ice hoppers at a frequency to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria build-up.
3) Garbage and refuse properly disposed; facilities maintained: Covering Receptacles – C – Keep the doors closed on the outside dumpster. Both doors and one lid was open on the outside dumpster today. Frequency-Removal – C – The cardboard dumpster is overflowing. The cardboard dumpster needs to be emptied at a frequency to prevent boxes from being blown out of the dumpster.
222 Public House, 222 East Main St., Elkin. Inspected July 15, score 93. Violations: 1) Hands clean and properly washed: Clean condition-Hands and Arms – P – An employee was witnessed loading the dish machine with dirty dishes and then removed clean dishes without first washing their hands. Employees must wash their hands between handling soiled and sanitized surfaces. The employee re-washed the touched items and washed her hands to correct the violation.
2) Food-contact surfaces: cleaned and sanitized: Manual and Mechanical Warewashing Equipment, Chemical Sanitization-Temperature, pH, Concentration and Hardness – P – The sanitizer in two of the four sanitizer bottles tested below 50ppm chlorine. The dish machine final rinse was found with a concentration below 50ppm chlorine. The sanitizer bottles were re-made to correct the violation. I will return in 10 days to ensure that the dish machine is able to maintain a sanitizing rinse of 50ppm chlorine.
3) Insects and rodents not present; no unauthorized animals: Controlling Pests – C – Several flies were found around the pizza oven today. Exterminate the flies.
4) Contamination prevented during food preparation, storage and display: Food Storage-Preventing Contamination from the Premises – C – A bag of sugar, corn flour, pancake mix and pasta was found open and rolled down or tied off in dry stoage today. Keep all dry foods stored in a sealed container or otherwise protected from contamination. Two large containers of buffallo sauce were found in dry storage with plastic wrap for lids. Plastic wrap can only be used if it is wrapped completely around the product. Miscellaneous Sources of Contamination – C – A bucket of sugar was lined with a trash bag today. If a bag is used to line a container, it must be designed for food contact.
5) Utensils, equipment and linens: properly stored, dried and handled: Equipment, Utensils, Linens and Single-Service and Single-Use Articles-Storing – C – A cup was found in the flour container and sugar contianer. Only a utensil with the handle sticking out of the product can be stored in a food product.
6) Equipment, food and non-food-contact surfaces approved; cleanable, properly designed, constructed and used: Cutting Surfaces – C – Repair or replace the cutting board near the deep fryer. Good Repair and Proper Adjustment-Equipment – C – Replace the gaskets that are split through on the fryer reach in freezer and tall reach in cooler. Repair the sandwich prep unit that is leaking inside the cabinet.
