Top Canadian marathoner Reid Coolsaet went to the Berlin Marathon looking to benefit from the fast course and competitive field. No doubt, in the back of his mind, the 36-year-old from Hamilton, Ont. was hoping to break the Canadian record of 2:10:09, which has stood for nearly 40 years. Coolsaet came close, running 2:10:29, the second fastest Canadian marathon ever. Coolsaet looks in fine form going into next year’s Olympics in Rio, which will be his second. He performance on Sunday moves him ahead of another still-active Canadian, Dylan Wykes, who ran 2:10:47 back in 2012. Coolsaet is the only Canadian to have run sub-2:11 more than once. Kenyan Eliud Kiptanui was second in 2:05:22, and Ethiopia’s Feyisa Desisa was third in 2:06:57. #Solegate @EliudKipchoge has run with shoe problems for most of this race. The insole of his Nike shoes worked their way out the back of the heel, flapping against his ankle, before the 30-year-old ran away from the field at roughly the 32K mark. Kipchoge has now put together an impressive and consistent road running resume, running all six of his marathons between 2:04:01 and 2:05:30, also winning five of those races. His only runner-up placement came at Berlin in 2013, when he finished behind then-world-record setter Wilson Kipsang. Kipchoge will be seen as a favourite in the marathon next year at the Rio Olympics. On the women’s side, fellow Kenyan Gladys Cherono also took advantage of the flat, fast course, winning in 2:19:25. Aberu Kebede of Ethiopia was right behind her in 2:20:48. Meseret Hailu, also of Ethiopia, placed third in 2:24:33. The 2:20 mark is seldom cracked by the top women in marathoning. Cherono is just the 27th woman all-time to run under that time.
