Latest Update: Published weekly newsletter
Read Full Post Online: http://www.runningcalendar.com.au/weekly-newsletters/2013-09-05/

This is a copy of the weekly newsletter from the Australian Running Calendar sent by email on September 5th 2013 covering interesting articles, recently updated event pages, and events coming up over the next two weeks.

I haven't quite managed to get things finished off on the new event listings layout yet, and been putting off this newsletter until the changes had "gone live". I'm just about done and should be finished today, but it's getting late in the week so time to get the newsletter out!

The layout changes should hopefully be online tomorrow afternoon, once I've finishing sorting something out with the search function and checking all the future listings.

Do ultra-runners really need coaches? Part 2.
In part two of a two part article, Ultra168 attempts to look at whether or not ultra runners need coaches. The second part looks at training with a coach and points out that "having a coach has made me realise that it's pretty hard to take an objective viewpoint of your own training. Coaches are removed emotionally and see purely the numbers, while listening to what you say and how you feel". Read the full article here.

Running across the ocean
Rose George spent five weeks on a container ship to research a book and spent time on a treadmill learning how to run. "Ship-running also taught me a rare stability, as the monsoon waves of the Indian Ocean sent the gym swaying by about 20 degrees each way." Read the article here.

GeoSnapShot adds photographic value to any event
Here's one for event directors: add value to your next running event by offering action photographs to each participant - without any financial risk or outlay. After completing a PB or just going the distance, event participants love to have a photographic memento of their achievement - that's where the GeoSnapShot website is perfect. Read more.

An interview with The Oatmeal
Matthew Inman is better known as "The Oatmeal", an online comic that tackles topics from grammar to the mantis shrimp to Nikola Tesla to paradoxical dogs, with smart writing and illustrations that are equal parts sweet, grotesque, and laugh-out-loud funny. Matthew is also an ultra runner and has been interviewed by Runners World here. There's links to a bunch of his comics, including the ones about running.

Running: a great sport to start in later life
You're almost certainly a runner already if you're reading this newsletter, but I thought this article at the Guardian's Running Blog was interesting, which points out that "lots of people start running in their 30s or older, and it is one of the few sports in which you can improve with age - and even progress to elite level." Read the article here.

New listings and dates
New listings and dates have been added for: Pub 2 Pub; Barefoot Fun Run; Geelong Cross Country Half Marathon; Run Devonport; The Color Run Sydney.

Online entry and PDF entry forms
Online entry / PDF entry forms have been added for: Run for Gold Fun Run; Rainbow Beach Trail Runs; Mousdash; Wild Women on Top Sydney Coastrek; Bogong to Hothham Rooftop Run (also a 35km event has been added to the existing 64km event).

Date corrections / updates / postponements
- Kids on the Run on 06 Apr 2014 has been postponed/cancelled
- Trailblazer at You Yangs Regional Park has been shifted from 16 Mar 2014 to 06 Apr 2014
- The Color Run in Ballarat is now showing as date TBD on the event website, so I've removed the originally scheduled date of 09 Feb 2014 from the calendar
- I've mentioned the Rainbow Run events a few times recently in these newsletters; last week their website has disappeared, online entry is no longer available, and they haven't been responding to any enquiries. I've deleted the event dates from the running calendar.

Check the website homepage regularly for updates
I'm a bit behind on checking up on event websites, having been busy with the updates to the event listing and search function, so there'll be a bunch of updates coming after the "go live". Check out the website homepage for the most recently updated listings, and be sure to check back regularly as there are usually frequent updates.
