Northland's toughest running event - the Cape Brett Challenge - will be back again in April 2014.

The re-established trail race for Anzac weekend, April 26th 2014, and based at Rawhiti in the Bay of Islands, proved itself a popular draw in 2013 by attracting a record number of competitors to the region. Almost 400 runners and walkers took part across three event options, with half of those taking part hailing from the Auckland area alone.

Among those who took part last April was Vajin Armstrong, arguably one of NZ's top trail runners, who is three times winner and current Kepler Trail record holder. Vajin smashed the Cape Brett long 40km course record by completing the route in 4 hours 10minutes, a truly superhuman achievement!

Event director, Jan Danilo, is heartened by the level of local interest and support on offer. "Everyone who was involved last year, from the Kaingahoa marae, local iwi, and Cape Brett Walkways, to landowners, DOC, and SAR, is onboard for next time. The support is total and 100%," he says. "Lots of competitors have said they'll be back and it looks like the event is going to be a regular Bay of Islands sporting fixture. Without such great support the Cape Brett Challenge wouldn't be possible and for that I am very grateful."

Sponsorship is being sought, but Jan can announce that once again FORMAT, Auckland-based design & shop-fitting firm, will be sponsoring the Whanganumu 17km. Overall naming rights, classic 40km and Kauri ridge options, as well as other sponsorship opportunities, are available so please contact Jan if interested.

MoreFm / Mediaworks Radio Northland are the event media partners.

Entries for event are now open. The classic 40km route is limited to 100 competitors and the first entries are in already, including a couple making a special trip from the USA.
