Ok, I have a confession to make. I don’t really hate bread and cheese. In fact I really love it. I love bread and cheese so much that I eat it at every meal. Here is the problem, my 2.5 year old is just like his mommy and pretty much only wants to eat bread and cheese, with a side a fruit at every meal. We are having a hard time getting him to eat meat and veggies. I know, we are not the first parents to go through this. However, my husband and I want to lead by example. So, we have decided to give bread and cheese up for a week.

Giving up bread and cheese for a week is very scary for me. It shouldn’t be since I’ve gone gluten-free and lactose free a few years ago. It wasn’t by choice. I was having some food intolerance and I had to figure out what was causing me some health issues. It turns out that I’m lactose intolerant. Luckily I can still eat aged cheese like cheddar, Swiss and Parmesan. I must absolutely avoid ice-cream, ricotta cheese, brie, regular milk (lactose free kind is OK) and yogurt. The problem is that since I can tolerate some cheese, I took that as a licence to eat a lot of it, to make up for the rest of the dairy I can’t have. I convince myself it’s good because it’s a protein. But it’s also has a lot of fat.

And, I’m also scared of giving up bread. My typical breakfast consists of 2 toasts and fruit, pretty much every morning, and then lunch is quite often a meat sandwich. What will I eat? That’s what scares me.

I’m not going to start this week, simply because we still have bread and cheese in the house. No use wasting it. We’ll finish off what we have first, but we are not buying anything else. Also, since I’m very unsure what I’ll be eating, especially for breakfast and lunch, I think some planning is in order to make this successful.

And what do I hope to accomplish with this experiment? I’m hoping to see that meals don’t have to revolve around bread and cheese. I’m also hoping to expose my son and myself to new breakfast and lunch foods. I also want our family to be exposed my nutrient rich foods like fruit, veggies and protein.

As I start my experiment, I will be documenting what I eat every day on the blog.

So, for right now, I’ll pretend that I absolutely hate bread and cheese so that I can live one whole week without it!

Here is what I did last week:

Urgh, I really lacked motivation this week. I’ll chalk it up to resting before my race on Monday,

Monday: 1 hour endurance swim

Tuesday: found excuses not to run or exercise

Wednesday: found excuses not to run or exercise

Thursday: found excuses not to run or exercise

Friday: More rest

Saturday or Sunday: resting some more before my Monday race

This week, I’m hoping to accomplish:

Monday: 10 km race

Tuesday: rest

Wednesday: 30 min strength training for swimmers

Thursday: 30 spinning at lunch

Friday: Rest

Saturday or Sunday; 5 Km run with Charlie
