The duchess has some serious competition in the royal wardrobe stakes

Kate, Duchess of Cambridge recycles for another royal fashion win

I’ve never been the biggest fan of the black and white military style McQueen outfit which Kate, Duchess of Cambridge chose to recycle for her latest public appearance. It was suitably smart for the visit to Bletchley Park but I just don’t think it’s one of her best looks.

And while Kate Middleton is still the queen of royal fashion, she does have some serious competition to deal with right now when it comes to clothes fit for a princess. Maybe it’s the surge of interest in royalty in recent years (quite a lot of that down to Kate and hubby, Prince William) but suddenly there are regal fashion icons everywhere. Here are Kate’s five biggest royal fashion rivals.

1. Princess Beatrice

Remember when Bea’s best known outfit was the beige pretzel she stuck on her head for Kate and William’s wedding? I can’t be the only one who’s glad that the number six in line for the throne has come a long way since then.

She favours a lot of the designers that Kate loves – like Jonathan Saundersand Roksanda Ilincic (who was responsible for Kate’s brilliant yellow outfit on her Australian tour). Beatrice also uses the same High Street brands as the duchess including Zara and Reiss. And it shows. The princess is now a complete stranger to fashion fails – her next appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony with Kate could be interesting.

2. Queen Letizia of Spain

I’m surprised it’s taken so many people until now to cotton on that Queen Letizia is a serious royal fashion icon. The former newsreader has been a major player in the Spanish Royal Family for ten years and she’s always been known for her on trend, super chic clothes.

Just like Kate, she loves to mix haute couture with High Street and enjoys a bit of royal recycling every now and again. For me, she’s more daring than Kate – I don’t think we’ll ever see the duchess turn up to a royal engagement in a leather biker jacket like Letizia – but she does hit the fashion fail button a bit more often as well.

3. Crown Princess Mary of Denmark

Kate and Mary are reported to be friends but when it comes to royal wardrobes, the Australian born princess is a real rival. Mary is always bang on trend showcasing new designs from Danish designers and international brands like Max Mara and Hugo Boss.

Mary is easily the most regal of all the royal fashionistas – while some struggle with carrying off the full royal look, no one does a tiara and serious bling like the future Queen of Denmark. I think that evening wear is an area where the Duchess of Cambridge struggles so maybe it’s time to ask her royal BFF for a bit of advice.

4. Princess Madeleine of Sweden

Madeleine is the princess with model looks who was spoken of as a wife for Prince William long before he ever got to St Andrews and hooked up with Kate. She’s so fashion conscious that Valentino designed her wedding dress and I can’t remember a time when she wasn’t on the Vanity Fair best dressed list.

At the moment, she’s living a low key life in New York with her hubby and new baby but the family are due back in Sweden in a year or so’s time when Madeleine’s royal profile will soar again. I reckon this princess is the one that Kate really needs to watch when it comes to royal fashion rivals.

5. Princess Charlene of Monaco

Charlene of Monaco is the fashionista’s royal, regularly hanging out with top designers and models at catwalk shows. So I’m not surprised that she’s always one step ahead of every other royal when it comes to her wardrobe.

And now that’s she’s expecting, Charlene is really giving Kate a run for her money. Kate’s maternity wardrobe won lots of praise but the princess of Monaco has beaten her hands down so far, showing off the beginnings of a bump in a stunning pink evening dress and a 1950s style summer dress that wowed. It might just be that Kate’s undisputed reign as royal fashion icon is in danger of coming to an end.
